funny thing is if they kept that numbering Ferrari would be still holding 27 and 28, after staying nearly a decade with Benetton/Renault and one year with McLaren

I meant if they kept using the numbering from 1996 onwards

Unexpected, but completely understandable. You could almost visibly see the pressure lift from his shoulders when the race finished on Sunday... can't really blame him for not wanting to put himself (and his family) through that again, especially now there's relatively little for him to gain. Too many drivers stick around for too long (looking at you Button, Massa) so it's kind of refreshing to see someone go out on top.

Bild* reporting that Toto's first phone call was to Renault, hoping to take advantage of the fact that all of Rosberg's merch has the word 'Nico' on it and so can be reused. His interest was rejected.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Dam, I am stunned, but when you think about it, you can understand from his prespective... but man he's still pretty young too!..... I bet some drivers will be scrambling to see what loop holes they have in their contracts

It will be Wehrlein. If not, then Ocon and Wehrlein will go to Force India. Other wise, it will make their junior program immediately bs. Just like the Ferrari program.

Oh I get you. I was thinking much earlier in time, while Heidfeld was a Mercedes junior.

And just like Ferrari as a team, Mercedes is conservative. Wehrlein is a rookie. All though being their reserve driver and his nationality helps, but Ocon was selected over him to Force India. Why would Mercedes settle with him if they can have more seasoned driver instead? And if Hamilton wants to quit within the next two years, they would want experienced driver now and Wehrlein or Ocon later. So if they can get an already winning driver, they will take him over their perhaps too green rookies because of their long term plans. If Mercedes had similar mindset with their juniors as Red Bull, they would take Wehrlein.

The smart money is on Wehrlein being shipped to Williams in exchange for cheaper power units and Bottas being released from his contract to move to Mercedes. Remember Wolff still manages Valterri.

and I forgot he was from Mercedes way before the Brawn purchase haha

I guess they'll pick someone from in house, too bad there are anymore testing, otherwise they could be ready to go

Bottas would likely be their best choice at this time and a good number 2 for Hamilton. Really don't think Pascal has done enough to be gifted a top seat like that just yet. Although they could go off the board and completely shock us with a surprise signing if one of the other drivers can weasel out of their contracts.

Here's another odd coincidence - Nico's daughter is about the same age as he was when Keke quit. I know Keke decided to quit in 84, before he was born, but still.

He mentions his family a few times, and I now get the distinct impression that he doesn't want his daughter (and any future Rosbergs) to miss what he had with his own father. He's a good bloke.

Sucks that Vandoorne has that Mclaren seat. Toto said halfway through the season he'd fix a seat for Stoffel if Mclaren didn't give him a chance. He would have been top pick for the Mercedes drive imo.

Yep. Wasn't the first time and won't be the last, but yep.

Scotty wrote:
Rosberg knows it, he knows he'll probably never do it again, quit while its the only moment you'll ever be on top.

There's your reason right there. Why end driving a shitbox like Button or scrabbling for 2 points a race like Felipe? He's the best in the world, and no-one will be able to say for sure that Lewis would have given him his receipt next year.

Scotty wrote:
I don't get it. You can still spend plenty of time with your family travelling in the F1 circus.

I don't think it's about the time, it's about the psychological effort that you need to beat someone that you know is better than you. He doesn't think he can do that again, but he knows at the same time he would not be content following Lewis around.

Scotty wrote:
He's turning down potential career earnings of about $100m over the next 5-6 years. I'm being cynical to the power of 100 but I can't understand his intentions. If he was 34, 36 38 years old maybe. But at 31? How many athletes quit their sport at 31 after winning the ultimate prize, also being the first time they won it?

He's already stupidly rich, and if he's sensible with his money and what he chooses to do next he could end up at Irvine's level of fuck-off wealth before he's 40.

He's also in the unique position of being qualified to do any job he wants within the paddock. He's been a driver. If he wants to be a technical director, he can work his way to that point very quickly with his qualifications. If he wants to do TV for Sky or RTL or anyone else, he probably already speaks that station's language so he could do that for whoever wants him.

Basically, he's got one title, he doesn't think he can win a second against Lewis even if Mercedes remain on top, and one of the weightiest paddock rumours is that next season will be Newey's revenge as regards to the new aero rules.
