While the hardware will be identical, teams will be free to develop their own computing algorithms and artificial intelligence technology to 'drive' the cars.

It sounds more like something for universities, like Formula Student. And if you remove the human part from the driving... don't expect a lot of mainstream interest.

Remember this?

Yeah, Tempelhof was actually a really boring track.

Hey, there's a GP in the middle of Paris next April! I couldn't have imagined seeing that in my lifetime.

Also, I have compiled a list of people who are interested in a human-less series:
Spoiler:

That's not a bug. Nobody is on that list. Literally not a single person on earth wants to watch these races, after the initial curiosity in the technology. By all means develop it, make a couple races for demo, keep working on the AI to help develop road cars, but the motorsport interest in that? The sport? It's minus infinite.

I loved it. AI programming is a crazy thing.

Actually, I'd love to see the first few races. Just because it will be hilarious and I'm interested to see how they'll do. You can program them to drive the track, you can program them to go fast. You can program them to do some simple evasive actions. Even passing should be able to do. They can do that in most games fairly decent. But AI will be AI and there hasn't been a breakthrough as of yet so queue the facepalm moments because it will be filled with it at first.

This will be the only series we can watch purely for the big crashes without any guilt.
