A bit of common sense has to be used, it's at the crest of a fast hill where cars have been known to get air, there might be fencing there, but that's not going to stop one of those cars, having said that, how often do you see something like that? (To answer my own question, once before at Donnington 25 years ago).

That video is err, scary.

There were a lot of people in between the two fences. While they could work on making sure the cars don't take off like that, they maybe should have the second fence higher and stronger while maintaining a strict enforcement of no spectators between the two fences. Bloody lucky there weren't more fatalities.

I'm not expert and don't know the details but if I had to guess I'd say the person killed was standing in what we'd call the conventional spectator enclosure behind the second fence (or directly in front of it), the car clears the debris fence line easily and about half way through you see a rucksack go flying, and also when the car comes to a rest although everybody in shot appears to be going towards it, one old guy is more concerned about what's hapenning behind the camerman that where the car is.

I know the photos show the car lands on someone's camping seat, but you can see that in the video and there's nobody between the seat and car, I could be wrong though.

But the tyre wall sort of launched the car into the air.

I remember at the Birmingham Superprix, one of the tightest corners had a tyre wall on the outside. But the drivers complained that they kept clipping the wall as it was sticking out at the front of the Armco.

So the organisers moved the Armco back and put the tyre wall to be level with the track. It did work as the tyre wall and the Armco was still there and it stopped the drivers clipping the tyre wall afterwards.

Move the tyre wall back so it won't stick out but then it was just a freak accident.

Look at that again. That car was allowed to pole vault the debris fence because of the grass burm behind the barrier and in front of the fencing. If that fencing was up against the barrier (like basically all the fences are in the U.S.) it would have stopped that car. The catch fences here can stop a 3400lbs stock car from getting into the crowd. I would think the Germans could build fencing that would stop a GT3 machine. The distance between the wall and the fence is the reason that car got over the fence in the first place.

Change the cars if you must, but let's get the fencing built right first and enforce the spectator zones. Move everyone back another 25 feet from the second fence.

More cars will be banned, SP10 is back allowed.

The speed difference between the special classes and the normal racing cars was getting too big, something had to be done. Unfortunately, as so often, a fatal accident had to happen first, followed by an overreaction.

All well and good but you're forgetting this is Europe where cost is more important than all other circumstances, just look at the crap armco they have at LeMans and any British track nowdays that folds over when a car looks at it sideways.

Expecting them to build fencing to the standards of US tracks for such a freak accident that will likely never happen again in our lifetime, is like expecting a Politician to tell the truth Thursday evening (Brits will know what I mean).

A third angle showing the immediate impact and what happens when the car flips over the fence. :8:
It's a wonder that the Nissan didn't hurt or kill even more people.

It's the best solution, because it brings the fastest, most interesting cars back. And only the fastest cars are affected, most cars will not even reach that speed limit.

Better this than banning over 70 cars from the grid.

It's only a stopgap solution, they won't keep it. I'd rather the speed limit then lose so many cars from the race.

They will come up with a better solution but that'll take time.

In order to make it possible for the top cars to compete in the VLN series and the Nurburgring 24, the following measures are planned – with immediate effect:

***Cars from the top classes will be slowed down by a 5 percent reduction in engine power.

***In order to prevent cars from getting airborne, the speed at critical locations Flugplatz, Schwedenkreuz and Antoniusbuche will be reduced.

***This will be achieved by a speed limit of 200 km/h (250 km/h on the ‘Döttinger Höhe’ straight) a few hundred meters before these parts of the track.

***Speed limits are enforced by GPS with heavy fines in place for infringements. Once cars have passed the speed limit zone, acceleration will be allowed again.

***At Flugplatz, Schwedenkreuz, Metzgesfeld and Pflanzgarten, access to certain spectator zones will be limited until reconstruction work has been completed to allow full access again.

***The temporary ban that was imposed on cars from the classes SP7, SP8, SP8T, SP9, SP-Pro, SP-X, Cup-2, the H4 GT classes, E1-XP1, E1-XP2 and E1-XP Hybrid on the Nordschleife in DMSB-approved events has been lifted.
