Just woken up to these news and seen the video.

It seems that Ward ran pretty deep into the track and I noticed it was hard to pick him out in his dark coloured race suit from the track. But still Stewart should be aware of the car an Ward on the side of the track.

That's my opinion despite no knowledge about sprint cars at all.

Fuck, I read this on a Dutch sensation site with no interest in NASCAR so I knew this had to be fucked up.

ESPN should publicly apologise for showing the incident video, that was appalling.

It's a bizarre one too. I have heard of drivers being killed by other cars, but not quite like this. Condolences to Ward's family.

I find it hard to believe that his intention was to actually hit, nevermind kill him. Tony has 'kicked up dirt' at someone before for approaching his car after an accident. Still, the consequences from this will be heavy.

On another note, this might end the whole 'driver taunting the wrecker after an accident' thing that racers do every so often after something like this.

Man, Chin summed it up perfectly on facebook. That was a whole lotta misfortune that could(should) have certainly been avoided. Looking at the video only makes the situation even more complex.

But it is still a really poor decision for Tony to race today, if NASCAR allows it.

Awful, awful incident that should have never happen. Ward paid the ultimate price over nothing and Stewart's part ain't going to be easy either. Very sad really.

No they shouldn't, it's real life and nasty things sometimes happen, all they should do is say here's the video, you may find it upsetting, if you don't want to watch it, look away now.

There's no way it was deliberate on Tony's part, but at the end of the day a person has died as a direct result both their actions, whether it was intentional or accidental is immaterial, he has to take responsibility for his actions and face the consequences (which in this Country would be manslaughter most likely). The way I see it, the only circumstances in which he should race today are if it's with the kids families blessing, if not he should step out the car until all this is settled, not just to be respectful, but for the good of the sport as a whole, we all know the deal, but many people won't see past "racing driver kills another in post crash fight".

Reading through this thread has been one of the most shocking, disturbing and depressing things I've ever read on this forum.
Just totally stunned.

Watching the video (didn't have the guts to go past the part where Kevin gets out of his car though) a big tragedy of it is the accident isn't even anyone's fault, just hard racing with 2 cars, Tony probably didn't even know he was working the outside line and it doesn't look like he was deliberately put in the fence, so for that to cause so much anger that led to this ultimate consequence....just chilling.

I liked Tony Stewart as a driver. We all know he wasn't someone to be messed with, but someone capable of deliberately killing a guy?
That's something no-one in motorsport ever wants to contemplate.
Race cars are powerful beasts but in the worst moments, they're also powerful weapons.

Lots of speculation about what will happen to Tony but it doesn't feel like the right thing to post about right now when this is so raw in the memory

RIP to Kevin Ward, just a horrible, nightmare situation all round.

Wow that's just shocking :(

Ward did what many angry drivers have done before him, unfortunately circumstance was against him.

I hope this incident helps change one aspect in motorsport in America, where it's endemic and almost unique to it:

Drivers should NEVER get out of their cars and walk down a live race track to shout and wave their finger at the driver that punted them out. It's never a good idea and this kind of accident was bound to happen sooner or later. It just happened to involve a big name in motorsports.

Long story short, I hope that drivers now think twice or thrice before coming out of their cars after being taken out. Fight in the paddock or whatever, not on the live track.

That would probably be the only good out come out of this. But it comes with a big price. This should have been taken care before someone lost life.

Not sure that this particular piece of information has been confirmed yet, so here you go;

Quote:
Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said his department's investigation into the incident is not criminal.

I assume that it could become so if they needed to but Tony does not appear to be being held culpable.
