I think this was more to do with how the teams sets up their cars than the tire itself. That being said, they need to realize that tire wear is quite frankly huge.

They said it during practice that it's like a knife edge between the seams, and that's helping chop up the tires. I heard they partially ground this place for the indycar race last year too.
