I don't know why people won't give Max credit for not binning it very often if at all last year. It is a very impressive accomplishment for a rookie, and if he maintains that sort of driving this year, tied in with the less reliable engines, he could well score on several occasions.

It's good for Marussia too that they are finally keeping the same driver line-up from one year to the next.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Because if you're not binning it, you're probably not trying hard enough.

Max is underwhelming and undeserving of an F1 seat. End of.

What was the average time he was slower than Bianchi in quali?

I don't know, but if memory serves me right the average gap in the first half of the season was pretty large (as Bianchi found maximum performance in the car pretty quickly) whereas towards the latter end the gap closed down (because Chilton started to reach the maximum performance).

This point came up after the Brazilian GP, so I'll repost my response from back then...

This appeared in Autosport.com's driver ratings for Brazil, it is referencing Max Chilton

Brought the car home a distant last, which while a little disappointing did earn him the record for number of race finishes for a rookie. A slightly underwhelming end to a season in which Chilton did better than those who have taken against him on principle are willing to recognise.

I know the old cliche of "to finish first, first you have to finish" but Max has finished last of the runners in 12 out of 19 races and despite officially completing every race, he did so by finishing a total of 28 laps down.

Now I remember in 2001 when Jean Alesi was an accident with Kimi Raikkonen away from finishing every race that year. But he did so in an era where there was high rates of unreliability (as demonstrated in his accident with Kimi), plus he was competing for points (top 6 back then remember) driving for both Prost and Jordan. Now that is a feat.

Seriously though, what I am supposed to be "willing to recognise"? I'm happy for Marussia and John Booth's team, but I find it hard to accept an average to poor pay driver in F1 celebrating this milestone. To me, it is rather empty.

Who do you expect him to beat? The Caterham last year was a better car and Bianchi is a driver who deserves to be in a better seat. There's no shame in losing to any of them.

He can't be going that slowly if he makes 107% each weekend. The fact that he is a very consistent race finisher will put him in range of the points this year. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up beating someone like Maldonado in the standings.

As he doesn't deserve a place on the grid, I don't expect him to beat anyone.

If people want to and are happy to support and celebrate mediocrity on the F1 grid then that's fine by me. But I won't.

He might luck into it but he'll be finishing last.

The only way any Marussia is going to score points is through luck and good reliability. A driver who doesn't crash or generally rag the equipment will be worth a lot of money this season.

Can't score points if you break the car every weekend.

Bianchi only retired three times in 2013 and I don't think any of them were actually his fault, so while Chilton is reliable it's not like it's a unique attribute.

Pastor only retired 3 times in 2013 so that logic doesn't exactly fit. But also let's not forget how his last crash (in a 2013 race) and retirement was caused...

Of course, Bianchi will be ahead in any situation that might lead to points.

But any team would rather have 2 cars in the points, and Chilton is a safe bet to bring it home as opposed to a new, unknown driver who might push too hard whilst trying to impress.

EDIT: Yes, the Monaco accident was very stupid on Chilton's part but he appears to have improved since then.

EDIT 2: Chilton might even outscore Maldonado on the basis that Maldonado doesn't have a seat for this season.

Lotus still have no engine supplier. No engine = no racing.

Oh I know, I completely agree with you. That's what I find funny.

Although technically Lotus has Renault. Well, according to the official FIA entry list.
