Some aerial pics have been posted on skyscrapercity of the Sochi construction and some of the layout for the track can be seen in the pics. Although the layout isn't the best ever, the scenery is quite interesting.

Another useless Tilkedrome
At least we have the time to watch the scenery as long as the race last oh and modify the track to race a figure 8 around the buildings.
Photo 5 looks like a nice platform for DESTRUCTION DERBY!

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Huh? How many Tilke tracks have been designed around Olympic facilities?

a Tilke track built around existing structures with a nice backdrop? That's something new.

I still believe the location is wrong, but better than the Moscow raceway anyway.

Bring it on 8)

Whats the difference?

That it is build olympic facilities doesnt make a difference to me it stille breath the air of a drome now Tilke has merged with his surroundings it but thats my oppinion.
I expect at least a boring track with 90% corners and boring straights.
I agree what Tobias says Moscow is far more worse do.

You're complaining and judging something negatively that we've not seen in action yet. So far the track looks interesting in sections, others look a little standard and formulaic. If you don't like it, don't bother watching F1. It's that simple.

Not all Tilke tracks are bad. Some are pretty great.

Monte is correct. The amount of $$ that goes into these facilities is substantial and this (along with the windtunnel) is the foundation of development. If testing is banned in an attempt to reduce costs, then so should these simulators.

Except he doesn't want them both to be banned, he wants his advantage back through unlimited testing, the same way he wanted his advantages back through 3 car teams and restricting aero development.

I almost want him to get his way because Red Bull will outspend him 3 to 1 and grind him into the dirt.

Your comment is not being read like a personal attack, you've no need to worry there

I'd rather wait until there is on-track action to determine whether to condemn the track or not. I'm hoping this track turns out more like Sepang or Korea rather than Valencia or Abu Dhabi.

I wonder what simulation software the teams use? Something like iRacing, Gran Turismo, rfactor, F1 challenge... or even Grid2?

On paper the Sochi layout looks awful to me. Then again I remember on paper the Valencia Street Circuit looked good to me... how wrong was I. The problem is that this one looks pretty damn similar to that one. Long straight, hairpin, 90 degree corners, repeat. The only saving grace may be that very long bowl like turn but I'm pretty sure it'll be easy flat out so it's as if it's a straight.

I know some teams use a rFactor Pro base which is then heavily developed on top of it by themselves, of course. It'll be on a whole different level than the consumer rFactor products we can buy/download and run at home, I suspect the whole physics core calculations will be modified, nevermind the gigantic amount of data they'll input into it which will be far far more than your common rFactor mod.

Oh I agree with you RtN, it is me saying both should be banned (both cost as much as each other, just different types of cost). Monte's logic about cost containment is true though, perhaps simulators should be banned and on-track testing be opened up again?

so why don't they put those simulator on consumer market to have more income?

Because that way other teams can just buy the simulator for $50 while the original team has developed it for $500.000.
It might also contain some car-specific data they are not keen on sharing.
