I can see how tarmac might work over grass and gravel on a corner like turn 1 (though in someways I guess the penalty for getting it wrong being so slight probably makes the corner faster) or Eau Rouge etc, but it's the run out of a 40mph hairpin, where cars won't be having high speed crashes.

Vettel should be penalised for this... Button left him enough space.
He simply drove off the track and gained position.

I think I did too ... however, I do think he should be penalised.

Had he not went there, Jenson was putting him there anyway to keep the place. So is Vettel meant to make his car fit in there?

Regarding taking the line, isn't there another part of the rules that you're allowed to take the racing line if you're ahead? As Vettel wasn't ahead while he was on track, Jenson had the right to take the line on corner exit.

Well the example Sky used was Rosberg in Bahrain. When he ran to the edge of the track with Massa that was fine because Massa was not alongside. When he ran to the edge with Lewis that wasn't fine, because Lewis was alongside. At that point Lewis can use the tarmac off the course to pass because Rosberg has refused to leave him room.

Now you can claim Vettel chose to do it, but you can also claim he simply predicted Jenson running him off the road. And he was right. Jenson did not leave a cars width on the exit, which is what this new rule is meant to achieve. Just because Vettel chose to pre-empt Jenson doing that doesn't make a difference - he was right - there wasn't room for him.

How about they grass the areas off track so that in these situations the driver HAS to do what they always did, get off throttle and fall in line.

Cars started flying in GP3 because of the grass. So whilst I agree with you, they won't do it on safety grounds.

But out of a slow hairpin I couldn't see that being much of an issue?

Fair point yeah. It should be grass there. In fact, it is grass on the exit of the final turn, and gravel into the stadium, much faster corners. So I don't understand what's going on with the choice of run off surfaces.

Good to see Button driving well though, he handed his shit card to Webber, but I fear he is too far back to make any impact this year.

If Vettel deserves a penalty for anything, it is for his attitude towards his team-mate during quali yesterday and for his pathetic complaints about Hamilton unlapping him. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with his overtake.

"If he had stayed on the circuit then he wouldn't have gotten the position because there was no room left for him" - interesting and potentially stupid comment from McLaren there.

And even more amazing was that it wasn't said by Sam Michael. Oh no wait, that's who is probably fighting McLaren's corner.

Please tell me they sent Sam Michael up to argue the case.

That would guarantee that Vettel stays second.

EDIT: Dammit, kals!

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

At the end of the day its what the stewards think and not McLaren. Personally I believe that Button went to the edge of the track because it was quite clear what Vettel was going to do.

Although, didn't Hamilton do the same thing twice in 2008 though?

Do you not remember the circumstances around Lewis Hamilton's disqualification from the 2009 Australian GP?

I do, but surely in this case it's what the two drivers think more so than the team itself and ultimately the stewards.

Exactly what I was about to bring up. McLaren have a very very poor track record at lying to the stewards about what happened then being caught out. You'd have thought they'd have learned not to talk about these incidents before the stewards have had their say.

No no and just no. The stewards interview drivers, a team spokesman and use data available to them. Lewis' BBC interview after the 2009 Australian GP was damning evidence used to disqualify him days after he was awarded the podium. Ellis' original point is very appropriate.
