Piquet has attempted clarify his original comments about Senna by digging himself into a deeper hole...

Quote:
Piquet has moved quickly to refute the reported criticism of one of Brazil's greatest sporting icons of all time.

"I said that if Ayrton had raced ten years earlier he would not have had the success that my father had," explained Piquet in a regular column he provides to Brazil's Yahoo Esportes website. "They were different times and realities. At the turn of the 70s to the 80s, reliability was much lower and drivers had to have much more of a mechanical side.

"Senna came a little later, when it was possible to drive almost all of the time at 100 per cent performance without needing to be a development driver as before," he continued. "Like me, Ayrton arrived in Europe concerned only about driving. He was a super fast driver and the best one in terms of pure speed.

"But he didn't have the same repertoire for the mechanical side as did the previous generation," added Piquet. "Each had its own reflection as the product of his time. Each did what was needed to dominate his era, and each time required different things."

I think what he's trying to say is that Senna was too hard on the cars :/

So if Senna was hard on his cars in an era of unreliability... how did he win 3 titles?

Great logic Nelson PeeKay

I'm going to pick out 3 random races from Sennas era and look at reliability.

Monaco 1989: 10 mechanical failures
Portugal 1989: 9 mechanical failures
Germany 1990: 12 mechanical failures

Oh yeah, reliability was incredible in those times Nelson

Why is he still deserved the oxygen of publicity? (Or the oxygen of...oxygen...)

You can tell the summer break is getting to the F1 journalists, they'll write any old crap to fill the pages.

Hurry up Spa so we can go back to ignoring everything Piquet has to say...

Fine, but new challenge, you're not allowed to mention the words "rain, wet, eco-system or storm"

OY!

But it is true. The Independent has run the same Hamilton-2013 story about three times this month.

I've ready somewhere about the tracks all now being about that 3.5mile length is because of something to do with the wiring for the timing loops or something like that.

I loved that GP, and the length.

I love that track in my annual 'Formula One' for PlayStation challenge ... as it happens, with one of the writers at Autosport - who is superhuman at 1995 circa racing games and can take the chicanes at Monza at 140+ ...

I think we can all agree on the fact that that is excellent news.

For the F1 test at Magny-Cours. Is it still the same lay-out as last used in 08 ?

Well yes, what other layout would they use?

I remember after the 2008 race there was talk of changing the lay-out so F1 would keep visiting. Maybe those changes took place in the meantime. Seems like a long time ago I saw F1 at Magny-Cours.

The final section of Magny-Cours is quite cool actually. Just a shame it came to replace a much cooler final section. The cars skidding past the pit wall was always a wonderful sight. And remember how Schumacher took provisional pole by spinning his car (taken away later though, quite obviously).

I thought the whole track was quite cool. Narrow, fast and with gravel traps. I think with Pirelli + DRS it would have played host to a good race.

It was an ok track. Nothing special. I preferred Paul Ricard before it was Bernie-cized.

one of my favourite corners at magny cours was that long left hander after exiting the first fast chicane. It allowed for different lines.
