very late response but I totally agree.

Varsha and Hobbs are, well unfortunately were, the perfect combo imo.

As I don't follow this thread and also because I don't watch UK's broadcasters as closely as most here, where is Jake going? Sky?

I always liked him from the very first moment I saw him hosting the bits on BBC.

I think BBC will lose quite a lot because he was by far the best of his "role" imo.

As for commentators, for me the best ever british one was John Watson. Would take him over Brundle or DC anyday

If it's true that DC is moving to sky (stupidest F1 move since Hamilton if it IS true though, better a big fish in a smaller pond (pundit wise ;) ) than being a small fish in a hugely contested pond ) then you might even get your wish next year, the Ben and Wattie team could yet be reunited.

Which might be about 10 years too late, imo.
Wattie is good but he's not at his best atm. He's great as an occasional practice guest but a constant commentator?
Can't see it.

I often wonder, had James Hunt lived, how long he would have continued the job. Remember, by the time he sadly died, he took his job very seriously and with massive motivation.

For some reason I can't even explain, properly, I have never liked Hunt as a commentator.

As codename said, Wattson is probably past his best. I don't know if he kept following F1 that much during the last dozen, or so, years. Surely he kept aware of the major things that have happened but maybe not the details.

I like those guys who commentates on WEC races, who are they? Well, actually, it doesn't matter as it's not that they are on the radar of UK F1 broadcasters' anyway, I imagine.

He'd have probably been given the sack for saying something seriously wrong (well way worse than the "total and utter bullshit Murray" one at Monaco) or been sued penniless by Patrese for calling him a killer one to many times.

Murray Walker's biography (the first one) is a great read about him and Hunt, Hunt never took anything seriously least of all his commentary job, he quiet often turned up 5 minutes before going on air with bottle of win or two in hand, and the infamous "James has just popped out to look over the back of the track where we can't see" was code for those in the gallery back home loosely translated as "he's fucked off out for another fag".

yeah Hunt was a complicated character, I'm sure nowdays some Doctor would find some classification to cover it.

He would have made the likes of BradK look positively respectable.

"fag" is a british slang word for cigarette. James had just left the commentary box for a smoke.

Alternatively (but not in this context), it also means the manservant of a richer child at a fee-paying school.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Yeah, fag has many terms here, it's also derogatory slang for gay people. Sorry about the confusion, as far as I know Hunt the Shunt liked only women (and lots of them by all accounts  ).

yeah, that's why I thought it couldn't be meaning homosexuality as I already saw many pics of him smiling while surrounded by half dozen of women :p

I think James might have carried on for a good while, as the thread has said he was a playboy but he did calm down and begin to take his job seriously towards the end of his life.

There's every reason to believe that he'd carry on until at least 96 and then when the BBC lost the rights who knows what might have happened?
He may have been offered a role by ITV, he may have took the opportunity to slink quietly away into the shadows.

The sad part is, we'll never know :(
