Norris commits to long-term McLaren F1 contract

https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/land ... term-deal/

Hmmm not sure how I feel about this. He still has two years to run on his current contract, not sure why he would bed himself down even further at this point of time. Though it isn't stated how long the extra contract is for. Might be an extention till end of 26 so he can see what the state of play is with the new regs.

perhaps McLaren wants to score big money if Red Bull or Mercedes (or Ferrari, who knows) decide to hire him in the future

It could be, riding on the hype created by the awesome Nascar race, maybe.

I was missing those 90s street courses like Indycar raced. Now it's a little too much... But I always like a new race track for 1 year or two. So, yay?

I'm just worried with what will happen in 3 years with a 30 race calendar plus sprint races and qualifies.

Sorry I meant do you think the sport is more popular because people are interested in the actual racing aspect?

more like a fixed 24 race calendar with Spa and Monza and Silverstone and Monaco alternating between each other

or Miami being canned due to the success of Vegas

I know it is much better than 10 years ago or so. But can't say I recall it being more popular now than in 90's or 00's.

However, there are signs that the momentum brought by DTS is fading with small drops in global audience. It is still a good moment, but the trend isn't the best anyway.

Agreed. I find it hard to believe it's more popular now than in the late 80's to early 90's. More media attention maybe, but that's because there's more media. Even so, I think for the amount of media there was back then the actual popularity of the sport was higher.

But who knows. I grow more salty with age.

Social media attention ≠ popularity. If that would be true, F1 was dead in Bernie's era.

Among my friends and relatives I don't anyone who follows F1 these days. It's a huge contrast to the late 90s and early 00s when it seemed everyone was watching F1. In school we would always talk on Mondays about the recent race and after school go to play F1 video games. Ok, there was an F1 boom in Finland back then and it was like a national sport, plus it was broadcast FTA, so you can't generalize too much. But I'm wondering what nationality are these "new fans" that make F1 "so popular" nowadays?

There's also big differences in different countries. For example F1 used to be in free TV in Germany during the Schumacher and Vettel aeras and was hugely popular. It's now on Sky since 3 years and hardly anyone remembers it even exists.

Define popularity….

Nobody I know watches anymore (because nobody wants to pay £80 a month to here for the privilege) and that includes many of us who used to work in the industry.

Well, I might be totally wrong, but looking how there's 8 billion people now comparing to 6 in 2000, and how most of the people have access to TV / internet, no wonder that it is at highest level of popularity now. In fact, I think every sport in the world have highest level of popularity in history lol

True, but with all that internet access comes so many other distractions/competition for viewers, e-sports for example weren't even much of a thing 15-20 years ago. F1 used to be THE EXTREME sports, now you can watch looneys throwing themselves off the edge of mountains on bikes live on Red Bull TV etc.
