It's part of the elitist bullshit image that F1 is giving itself. Everything needs to look clean and classy and slick and (hugh, I hate this word....)... sober.

Then you get Nico Rosberg in a TV ad featuring a classy black-tie rich cocktail party, advertising for.... Heineken.

In indycar, they only have to sponsor 1 car. Which will attract more sponsors. And I can imagine it is lots cheaper to put your brand on a car than classy F1.

F1 could be so much prettier and healthier if BAR was allowed to run 2 different cars. Imagine what that would have set in motion.

well you can blame that on the tobacco ban, even the throwbacks are based on the good old times of the coloured cigarette packs

They don't deserve such an easy excuse. IndyCar teams have managed to look great.

It also comes down to weight. Every gram of paint is time given away.

That can also be extended to getting paddock passes. If you're a fake celebrity or some ya de da, you can cruise in. A fan gets nothing. Its like getting a security clearance for the Pentagon.

Meanwhile in IndyCar, you can spend minimal money and get access to Gasoline Alley at the Indy 500.

When McLaren went chrome for 2006, Ron Dennis spoke at length (of course) about how they'd paid PPG to develop a new lightweight chrome paint. When F1 wants something, they get it.

Racing should be experienced like this, not the glossy bullshit of today. Smelling rubber and liquid additives...

Yeh, compared to Renault, Torro Rosso.
But maybe less is more.

I quite like the Merc. That's probably about as good as a modern F1 car can look.

How long are they going to keep stretching the wheelbase?

And no comment about the look of modern cars. I enjoy small first-lap side collisions, when all those precious little bullshit appendages on the floor (that they spend countless hours optimizing to the nearest vortex), all end up flying the fuck off, way up in the air.

new engine might (hopefully) be a complete dud.

More worrying, it shows how little effect the fuel limit increase will have on race pace:

Quote:
Despite this, Mercedes has focused on efficiency and Cowell has suggested that it may not fill to the maximum 110kg because of the weight handicap that comes from carrying extra fuel.

"If you have got an efficient engine with efficient aerodynamics and you are prepared to do a little bit of lift and coasting, then you have the opportunity to start the race at less than 110kg," he said.

"For every 5kg of weight you save, it's about two tenths of a second a lap quicker, so there is a natural reward to starting the race a little bit lighter. "

There is still a competitive edge from making an efficient car - both power unit and aerodynamics - and racing smartly to make sure that you have good pace at the start of the race as well as through the race."

They should impose a max AND a min load at the start of the race. It will then force them to dump it rather than save it.

Absolutely this. It's a simple but effective solution.

I really hope to see those cars running dry late in the race

but the Mercedes looks great, a good improvement in their livery

I really like that, especially with the blue.
