Screw Austin Dillon. "He would have done the same thing." I hate that argument. Some drivers actually have a bit more class and respect. Sometimes you have to accept that there's nowhere to go and lift off the gas. Watching the head on, Dillon could have easily jumped to the outside.

Class goes out the window on the last lap and Almirola really should have not blocked there. I agree Dillon's win was dirty but on the last lap, no one is going to lift, it's as simple as that and I'm just amazed that Almirola actually did that. He'd have ATLEAST had a shot even if Dillon did get alongside or past him.

Would you say that about any other form of motorsport, even in the biggest races? A lot of pro drivers have this crazy concept of winning honourably, and even losing honourably. And the ones that don't are usually held in check by a governing body with some idea of racing etiquette.

Even outside the racing world, that is the #1 excuse for insecure, spineless, entitled, assholish cowards to justify why they're being assholes and doing the dirty work. I hear this all the time in the workplace, outside, everywhere, or some variation of it "If I didn't do it, somebody else would have" - yeah champ, way to own up responsibility for your actions.

(I'm not saying Dillon is that kind of person in general - I know little about the guy except that he ended up in the fence a couple years ago, but he sure talked just like I described).

I posted this at The Fastlane

No one wants to see that kind of thing happen, but it’s the last lap of the 500. Almirola was defending a run, Dillon was trying for a closing gap.

Whether we like what happened or not, the last word on the matter goes to Almirola who actually gave Dillion the benefit of the doubt

Quote:
”He's not driving too aggressively, he's trying to win the Daytona 500 just like I was," Almirola said.

"I saw him come with the momentum and I pulled up to block and did exactly what I needed to do to try to win the Daytona 500.

"I wasn't going to just let him have it. I wasn't going to just stay on the bottom and let him rail the outside, so I blocked and he got to my bumper and pushed and I thought I was still going to be OK and somehow I got hooked.”

That's just it. When the governing body (NASCAR) leans on the side of entertainment over fairplay, can you blame the drivers? NASCAR favours driving standards like Dale Earnhardt more than Jeff Burton, and even more so today.

For viewing figures, the 500 was a 5.1, down from 6.5 last year...

Ouch...

Well I did immediately think of the 1989 Indy 500

A day later, the one thing that bugs me the most is that austin did not attempt to go around, just thru. We've seen blocks weaving up and down the track. But not here. Did Aric block? Sure. But it was a tame block. Barely 1 lane change. Austin clearly had "IT'S THE LAST LAP YOLOLOLOL" on his mind.

I suppose, to play Devil's Advocate, it is what Dale would've done in that scenario.

Terry Labonte, Bristol?

i have a theory about how that went down. its a bit nuanced if you want to hear it, but you could tell by dale's reaction he didnt quite mean to crash labonte out of the race

it doesnt change the fact he crashed labonte. i just think he gets vilified a bit more than he deserves to - for that particular incident anyway

Dale moved a lot more people than he wrecked. Just the skill involved in that deserves respect - these days nobody seems to know the difference.

A couple of laps before, Labonte hit Earnhardt twice. I don't think Earnhardt meant to wreck Labonte, but he did mean to return the favor. What I think he intended to do was what Jeff Gordon did to Rusty twice at Bristol (in 1997 and 2002).

Just a recap on the truck race...

Screw Austin Wayne Self. :yuk:

Blew a right front tire twice in the final laps, and the first tire went down in front of myself and a group further towards the back. He tried making it to pit road and all the trucks around us were going under the yellow, clipping the grass, bouncing off the outside wall... you name it... trying to miss him. It killed all our momentum and any chance of going and racing for the win. OF COURSE the broadcast didn't show it or mention it.

My truck was so fast and could suck up better than almost every truck out there, and I say that with confidence. At least I know we will have a rocket for Talladega. Never thought I'd be bummed with a top 15 at Daytona. :p

Honestly, you probably fared better by losing the lead draft, the way they were driving you probably would have been caught up in something.

Yeah screw Austin Wayne Self. On that last restart I was looking forward to a zippy/Norm Benning allegiance Wayne-training it all the way to the front, but alas, poor Yorick :(

Shouldn't we make it "alas, poor Yunick" given the setting?

I'd rather go down as a Daytona 500 winner and have everyone hate me rather than finish 2nd and have everyone tell me how honorable I am until they forget all about me.
