It doesn't match Facebook, and maybe that's what caused the issue. Facebook shows Schumi onboard for the first half a lap, whereas Instagram shows Schumi onboard chasing Senna. Both image caps show Schumi behind a McLaren.

Oops, that'll teach me for looking at the caps so briefly! Both tast clips though.

Rewinding to the paywall discussion, in Portugal it's very prohibitive:

On Vodafone (my provider), I would need to pay €28.90 for the basic TV plan and then €24.49 for SportTV (5 channels in SD, €28.49 for HD).

This gives us F1, MotoGP, NASCAR, IndyCar and other bits and bobs but for a total of €53.39, the F1 coverage is the sessions and a bit of studio chatter before the race, no on-site reporters or any special features.

Plus the €34 of our equivalent of the license fee means that more than 10% of the average wage here goes to TV.

I'd much rather have a FTA coverage with just qualifying, race, ads and cut away right after the podium than pay off my arse for premium channels.

@amq55 Move to Australia, come live with me, then and we can go halves. That's $18 a month. Someone on minimum wage here earns that in about an hour :P

I thought there would be more examples, but clearly there isn't. Didn't realise how fortunate I was.

I'm still standing by my point though. Motorsport is an expensive sport, from go karting all the way through to F1. It shouldn't have to be free. I'm happy to accept if its too expensive, like some of the examples given, but I feel doesn't necessarily need to be free either. I can also understand not wanting to pay money while money hogs like Bernie were in charge, but I think we've moved past him now.

F1 is struggling, nay dying. Popularity is dropping rapidly. It's not feeling the effects financially now, but if it continues on the path its on it will. Demanding it should be free doesn't help the sport in anyway. There are more important issues at hand (i.e. making the races more exciting).

I understand exactly what you are saying Scotty. But I can't help but feel the last part of your statement contradicts your whole point. I feel F1 is dying BECAUSE it is becoming less accessible than what it was in the past to the casual viewer. Yes, the racing sucks and that has a lot to do with the die off in currant fans, but when you are not actually expanding the base to new fans, any die off in current fans will only exasperate the problems.

Except F1 went through a great many periods of even less competition (with even worse TV coverage to boot) in the past decades

If F1 can gain a following with a biased local director only following the local hero and missing anything exciting, while Murray Walker commentates down a crackly phone line, it can do that now when at least the director cuts to a mid-field battle occasionally

And the casual fans are a lot less demanding than us when it comes to excitement. There were plenty of people who were Ferrari fans who were happy to see Micheal Schumacher mop up the field without breaking a sweat 15/16 years ago because it was on their TV for "free", so I'm sure the boring racing we have endured in 2017 and probably will again this year won't deter them.

Taking it away from them and asking them to pay more for that boredom is another matter entirely

The difference is today viewers have a lot more entertainment options competing for their time, most of which offer bigger thrills and take less time. The days of F1 and motorsports in general attracting a large audience for several hours at a time are over, and trying to return to them is the reason we're seeing so much gimmicky shit in motorsports these days.

Accept that it's now a niche activity, niche activities usually require payment to survive, and enjoy the fact that it continues to exist in some form. Or continue encouraging motorsports' transformation into Ninja Warrior.

I do wonder if there is a correlation between lower sponsor income and F1 disappearing behind the paywall?

I do expect many companies to be held back by it as fewer people get to see it. I'm still surprised that a team as McLaren has such a hard time finding a big sponsor and I doubt it is solely hindered by their own high demands.

So that's a guaranteed first or second unless the car stops

Wow, I know Le Mans was likely, but the whole WEC (with the exception of one round) is pretty amazing.

Bingo, my son (13) doesn't even watch TV, the only program he has watched this year are Blue Planet 2, the Tiger one and Winter Watch.

Pretty soon there will be a whole generation who go "what's a tv?".

I doubt the product itself will disappear because it's still a better experience to watch a movie on a 55inch, than on your 30 inch pc screen or your even smaller laptop screen.

What will disappear though, is the every day regular TV programming.

Alonso confirmed at Toyota for WEC Super Season in all rounds that don't conflict with his F1 schedule.

just imagine if he starts shouting at the 22nd hour "LMP2 engine! LMP2 engine!! AARGH!!" once power drops

I really hope he can win this thing, he's one of the most consistent driver I've ever saw

He could potentially be doing both 2018 and 2019 Le Mans as well, F1 calendar willing.

Well shit, Alonso wants to win Le Mans however he's chosen the unluckiest and unlikeliest manufacturer for the job.

Good luck Fernando.
