2017 FORMULA 1 PIRELLI BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

f1.com wrote:
Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps circuit is among the most historic on the Formula One calendar, having hosted a (non-championship) Grand Prix as long ago as 1924, and remains one of the most popular venues with drivers and fans alike.

Run on narrow public roads, the original Spa layout was an amazing 14.9 kilometres long and notoriously dangerous. The lap distance was reduced slightly over the years, with some corners eased, but when the 'old' circuit staged its final Grand Prix in 1970 it still measured just over 14 kilometres and remained staggeringly quick - Chris Amon set that year's fastest lap at an average speed of just under 245 km/h.

Spa did not return to the calendar until 1983 and then in drastically revised form, with lap distance cut to just under seven kilometres. Somehow, though, the circuit's magic was retained. Around two thirds of the lap used the original layout and the legendary Eau Rouge corner remained intact. Only the new Bus Stop chicane on the run down to La Source drew criticism.

More than twenty years on Spa remains the longest circuit on the calendar. Its mix of long straights and challenging fast corners, coupled with its picturesque setting, means that most drivers still rank it among their favourite tracks.

The weather is still notoriously changeable (it can often be simultaneously raining on one part of the track and dry on another) and Eau Rouge, with its high speed and sudden elevation change, maintains its reputation as one of Formula One racing's most technically demanding corners.

Such is the challenge of Spa that only the truly great drivers can really claim to have mastered it. In fact just six men have won the race more than twice - Juan Manuel Fangio (three times), Damon Hill (three times), Kimi Raikkonen (four times), Jim Clark (four times), Ayrton Senna (five times) and Michael Schumacher (six times).

A huge crash with Kevin Magnussen damaged the barrier bringing red flag. Nico Rosberg won.

Top 5 predictable points by JJ:
-Last Spa race with #nohalo
-Track layout is good but ruined with tarmac
-Weekend looks dry so still no wet races this season (China won't count)
-Spa usually provides good races, but for example 2013 & 2015 were very forgettable.
-Everyone hopes Kimi would win one last time at Spa, but that doesn't look probably if Vettel won't retire on lap 1.

I disagree with the last point. Kimi' form has really improved during the last few races and he was arguably on par with Seb.

I disagree with the last point. Kimi' form has really improved during the last few races and he was arguably on par with Seb.

Yeah, Kimi's been par with Seb for the whole time, but Ferrari will f*ck him over because they think Vettel is the next Schumacher for them. Hamilton will dominate the race, Bottas 2nd and Kimi 3rd after Ferrari f*cks him over for Seb, who retires because of either turbo failure or driver mistake just after the first pitstops.

And just before the pitstops, Ferrari has 1-2 lead, but they decide to use Kimi as a shield against the Mercs at that point. And once Vettel retires, and the smoke settles down, Ferrari realizes that Mercedes had another strategy all along and now is ahead of Räikkönen because of the shield strategy they had.

And on the podium we will have two very upset Finns, one very happy championship leader and the italian and the brittish press are already calling Räikkönen too old and slow for this shit and how great the halo will be next year to prevent things like disagreeing with sir Jackie Stewart on something racing related.

Oh and, no rain. Or nothing interesting at all during all the weekend. Kubica ain't gonna be there, Palmer is going to f*ck up in every session or so, there's no spread in the starting grid, except that although Alonso is fast in qualifying, he's going to get a huge penalty due Honda reliability issues...which aren't issues any more, but a standard.

4/10 race.

I wouldn't be shocked if the halo is repealed before spa.

I wish that were true but it won't be possible because it will be a structural part of the car.

The part they cut holes in isn't structural, but on a related note I will never not be amazed that Sauber managed to basically pioneer the 1996-regulated padded cockpit in the middle of 1994.

I know this isn't what you mean, but I love the implication that the Belgian GP should be run on dirt :flag:

I know I'm being an old whiney piece of shit here, but is anybody else bothered by the red/yellow curbs and tyre barriers? Feels too "Spanish" or "warm" if that makes sense. That, and the tarmac, have removed the "forest" feel that the track used to have.

About the curbs, I'm used to it now and actually like it.
Tarmac run-off and continuing cutting of trees is not a good idea though.
