2017 FORMULA 1 ROLEX BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Silverstone Circuit

f1.com wrote:
Like so many of England's racing circuits, Silverstone started life as an aerodrome. When the Second World War ended in 1945, England's other two circuits, Donington Park and the legendary Brooklands, had fallen into disrepair. And so it was that the outer taxiways and interconnecting runways of Silverstone became adopted by the Royal Automobile Club as the home for the British Grand Prix in 1948. The circuit was fast and challenging and in 1949 the shape was formed that remains the basis of the track to this day.

When the Formula One World Championship was incepted in 1950, Silverstone held the very first round, won by Guiseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo. In 1951 the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) was handed the lease by the RAC, and huge modifications were made. The pits were moved to the straight between Woodcote and Copse, from the Farm straight where they had originally been, and a short circuit was built within the larger circuit, cutting from Becketts corner to Woodcote.

From 1955 the British Grand Prix swapped venues between Aintree and Silverstone, but with the advent of the 1960s, Aintree fell out of favour and the race was switched between Silverstone and Brands Hatch.

In 1971 the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) bought the entire 720 acre plot on which Silverstone sits and went about redeveloping the track. New pits were built and a chicane was erected at Woodcote which provided close finishes and great overtaking opportunities.

In 1987, with speeds reaching astounding levels, a corner was built before Woodcote, and in 1992 a new complex of corners was created between Farm and Woodcote. And in recent years various upgrades have been made to the track's facilities. A racing school now exists at the circuit and with government funding a new bypass has been built, greatly improving access to the once notoriously out-of-the-way venue.

In 2010 came another major change to the circuit's Formula One layout, designed to further improve the venue for spectators and provide an even greater driver challenge. The new infield layout juts right at the reworked Abbey bend before heading into the new Arena complex of turns. This takes drivers on to the main straight of Silverstone’s National circuit, before rejoining the previous Grand Prix layout at Brooklands.

Another great circuit (although I prefer the previous layout), and another dull dry race coming.
Isn't it funny that Free Practices are 99% dull and yet we enjoy watching them, however, similarly dull race is regarded as horrible. Maybe we should think races as "very busy free practice sessions" and they become instantly more enjoyable. ;)

Oh, and Hamilton wins.

It's not like Hamilton gonna go off on the first turn and crash almost head on into the barrier not gonna happen

Must be hard going through life being so cynical. Your posts seem to remind me of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.

Have a bit of hope. Everyone was mopey, sad, miserable on the lead up to Baku, expecting a repeat of 2016. Look what happened there. Can't spare a little bit of optimism?

Who do you want to win? I'd like to see Ricciardo or either Raikkonen win, for different reasons of course.

Baku was funny. I was actually optimistic about it.

I'm Australian, so it's a given who I want to win.

When was the last time a race was won by someone from outside the big 3? (Ferrari, Mercedes, RBR). Be nice to see Williams, FI win a race.

Kimi winning for Lotus in '13

I'd say Puddleglum from Narnia suits me: "The bright side of it is… that if we break our necks getting down the cliff, then we’re safe from being drowned in the river".

The crueler prediction you make, the happier you are when you're prediction goes wrong. So: The race will be a total borefest and both Finns retires

Oh, and Ecclestone buys F1 back to himself Image

Why go head-on in the barriers at turn 1, when you have Stowe at the end of the straight for that?

If Schumacher could do it, so can Hamilton!

...and didn't Schumi technically do that under a red flag? (Or was it a safety car? can't remember).

Yeah, because a couple cars were stalled in the middle of the grid.

It was unfortunate. If they had a quick system to tell drivers, like track-side or in-cockpit lights that are rampant nowadays, he may have lifted off and not got into such a big hit. I know, it's a "what if", so we could also include harder carbon monocoques, more tyrewall layers, tyrewall cover sheets, TecPro, driverless electric cars...

I'd say no, people tend to forget that Hakkinen was already the championship leader at that time. Sure, a lot went wrong for him later in the season but if we're sticking with the "what ifs" then all those things didn't happen either. :p

In an alternate universe, Mika broke his leg in the Hockenheim blowout accident, and Eddie Irvine became the 1999 F1 World Champion.

imagine Eddie Irvine winning the first drivers championship for Ferrari in 20 years, almost 20 years after it would seem unbelievable

Is Mika Hakkinen the only driver in F1 history to win the drivers title twice in the same season?

Not sure why a Hamilton win seems inevitable, with the golden horseshoe crammed up his arse, whatever Vettel does turns to gold at the moment.
Considering his car and specifically tyre advantage they have at the moment, coupled with the fact there's quite a few long, tyre hurting corners (Luffield, Maggots/Becketts), I'd wager a Ferrari pole and Vettel victory.

This layout is better than any Layout silverstone has had since the 80s, but it seems we only have 3 more chances to enjoy it now they've activated their break clause and are about to play hard ball with FOM

The Silverstone layout is good, it just lost a lot of its character with all the FIA Grade I bullshit and the bland white/red curbs (or are they black?). Now it looks like any modern track that could be anywhere in the world. This goes for other classics too; Monza, Spa...

Hamilton is really, really sharp when it comes to high-speed combos like Maggots/etc. Added the extra boost from the crowd he will be very strong and difficult to beat. Definitely not inevitable.

I can't see other teams being strong here though, but who knows? I don't understand anything to F1 anymore. All the mid-fielders, heck even RedBull, seems to have huge performance variation from one race to another.
