I guess the problem with going out early is twofold - 1) you don't get a slipstream and 2) there's one less car in the traffic jam, making it easier for everyone else to get a slipstream. Everyone's looking to be the one lucky guy to get the perfect slipstream but it ends up with 90% of the grid looking like clowns.

Although I don't understand why it's suddenly become a much bigger problem in the last couple of years.
