I've stayed away from the board for awhile, but figured I would remind everyone what happened 25 years ago today:

The greatest season finale and possibly greatest NASCAR race ever:

Kyle Petty and Dick Brooks are probably the only tolerable ones of the bunch IMO, at least among those attempting to sing and not going "spoken-word".

God bless Bill Elliott for trying to carry a tune with his impossibly thick Georgia accent.

And oh god Joe Ruttman is the worst one by a country mile.

I thought Kyle Petty, Dick Brooks, and Phil Parsons performed decently. The rest (of the ten I listened to) were just awful. Especially those with Bill Elliott and Trevor Boys.

In celebration of the late, great Bud Moore...here is the last race his team won.

Gonna throw this one out there - Ken Squier - I believe he is regarded as a legend and pioneer in motorsports broadcasting, however, I've been watching some classic NASCAR and IMSA races from the late 80's / early 90's recently, and I can't help but feel that I'm missing something? Races where he's been "play by play" sound as dull as ditch water, their has been events where he's rocked up to be part of the broadcast team and announcers who are great at conveying excitement and creating a buzz (Bob Varsha, Mike Joy for example), get shunted down into the pits.

There definitely was a tendency in the past for emotions to be suppressed during broadcasting in favour of "slickness" or "professionality", a detached viewpoint on the event that was taking place instead of the reality of another human being watching the same events as you and experiencing the same emotions

It's a miracle really that people like Mike Joy, or over here, Murray Walker managed to come to the fore when they wear their emotions on their sleeves so much.
