funny I thought it was the same starting engine that you plug into the gearbox to start

in IndyCar is standart xtrac gearbox, but an internal ignition wouldn't bring more weight to the car?

That may be the case, however each F1 car has a different procedure involving personnel, external power (battery or such like) plus sequencing through the steering wheel. Having said all that the restart procedure seems to go a lot quicker when a car stalls during a pit stop.

Sometimes I wonder if this didn't get too silly at some point in history. Driving a car that needs to be pre-heated before start, can't idle for more than 30 seconds, whose brakes/engine overheat if you don't go fast, and that you can't turn off and restart as you wish.

From what I remember (and my memory might be playing tricks with me) the FIA did want cars to have onboard starters st some point.

I'm sure this did actually make it into the regs at some point, but it was a Bernie Special and so removed with a bunch of other stuff. Maybe around the time of the CDG wing?

A lot of this came in around the time of computerised engine management, in the late 80s/early 90s. It was mentioned after the v10s were dropped that the v8s could actually idle for massively longer because they were no longer quite so stressed. I would imagine the same applies to the current engines due to the ICE actually being quite small and gutless compared to previous engines.

AIUI, the starting procedures only really apply to cold starting, and aren't for hugely different reasons than most other racing engines - I read that the biggest difference nowadays is that the spaceship lubricants and tolerances involved mean that a cold engine is basically seized at first.

Given how easily they can restart them in the pits, as @

pointed out, I would assume that a bump start is still possible. Would probably fuck up the hybrid components, though.

I have a stupid question: can you jump-start a current F1 car?

In F2 the marshalls managed to do it for cars that stalled after the race 1 red flag pile-up, wondered how the drivers do it (must've a starter button inside I guess?), and whether F1s are the same although I doubt it.

I don't know about jump starting, but the drivers can restart the engine with the electric motor from the kers system. For instance Kvyat stalled the engine in a runoff in last weekends practice session and he restarted it with the instructions of his race engineer using the onboard electric motor. :)

Yup. Here is a video of ol' Palmer doing it at Spa

Quite surprised they're allowed to do that specific name as its basically F1.

Also I find the name pretty pretentious for arguably the 4th best team on the grid.

Maybe the will Force One to give room to the other driver who still has a shot for podium.

What would you do when your number one driver doesn't want to challenge the number two for the win? Force One!

Perez has soft brake pedal and all four tires flat, what would you do? Air Force One.

Spoiler:
:tumble:

Sorry, I just had to. I'll get my coat.

They'll first have to learn not to force one another off the track

Get off my plane track

Now that there's going to be a McLaren movie and a Williams movie, that would be a great plot for Force One movie.

We'll see...

There's no other circuit in GB that can host F1.
