Talking about Honda, the engine deal with Sauber has been confirmed this morning.

Corrected

That's pretty much correct. Sato's 2005 season was abysmal and the Williams/Button falling out left them with no choice really.

Also, that Sauber/Honda deal is a big call for them. It might be interesting to see if the Sauber car design allows for better performance.

This year it seems that only Mercedes and Ferrari are that 3s faster than what they were last year, others are merely a 1s faster, if any. How's this any better for the sports?

are they? Only in China that Mercedes and Ferrari were 3s faster. On Melbourne I think it was something like 1.7s, on Bahrain it was like 0.7s and now, on Sochi, it was less than 2s, once more(I'm sure Rosberg could've done at least 1.34.9, going by his Q2 time)

At this point I very much doubt they will improve more than around 3.5s anywhere. Barcelona should be the biggest gain, approaching 4s, but that's still far from the loudly claimed 5s, that was implied to be universal not specific to a few tracks. Let's face it, the speed gains of the cars are very underwhelming. At least they look MUCH better and are also decently fast on high speed stuff

So, our beloved EJ claimed that Mclaren will use Mercedes PU next year(likely a very inferior customer one). He also said Sauber would use Honda and that Alonso is off to Renault.

the 1st of may is quite low for sports press, looks like time is finally healing the wounds of the greatest sports race that ever had the privilege to being born in Brazil and his life taken so early while he could win more titles than Schumacher itself

anyway RIP Senna and Ratzenberger, today is a time to remember the saddest weekend in F1 history

funny that in the last episode of Top Gear Eddie interviewed Bernie and he asked if the races are fixed so championship could last until the final race, to which Bernie only replied "I don't fix nothing, only if the teams fix the races between themselves"

looks like they forgot to put Eddie on the race fixing scheme :p

Such is the way of F1 where we lose teams regularly but the only even highly-unlikely rumours about a new team to the grid involve taking over an existing entry.

We're going to be stuck at 20 cars for a while.

Until we go down to 18 anyway

FIA hasn't even opened F1 entry process for 2018 or beyond. Last one was 2015 and the previous was in 2013. I'd rather see 6 Romanian cars at the back of the grid than 6 empty slots.

Probably worried that someone on the level of MasterCard Lola would take a spot.

Honestly if someone is willing to spend millions to DNQ each race it's fine by me. I want a true underdog again. Give me 30+ cars fighting for 26 starting spots. Give me surprise qualifiers.

Being so elitist is part of the problem. We don't need MasterCard Lola (although MasterCard is to blame for that debacle) or Andrea Moda but we do need minardi or scuderia italia or coloni or AGS. Teams knowing they don't have a shot at wins and only score a single point when extremely lucky. Yet each year they scrape up just enough money to do it all over again just for the love of the sport.

Lola would have been much better had MasterCard not forced them in a year sooner then they were ready for.

Underdog teams like Minardi, even HRT were popular with fans. Scrape enough money to get by and if they go bankrupt, they go bankrupt. Teams have always come and gone, always used to have those teams struggling to get in with shoestring budgets, bad cars and bad engines and when they scraped in it was a good story. Like Hill unexpectedly qualifying the Brabham at Hungoring in '92. It's because they're so elitist in keeping out potential teams that they're afraid of losing the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari because that would be potentially a loss of six cars from the grid. Allow single car teams, allow customer chassis. They wouldn't be constructors so no need for the likes of Williams to worry about them in the constructors championship. They'd only be potentially able to take away points from their drivers.

Actually constructor points should be different from driver points.

Do you know the truth behind the Lola attempt and failure? Most people see what happened in 1997 and laugh about it without realizing what actually happened.

Lola were supposed to enter F1 with MasterCard as main sponsor in 1998. Late in 1996 MasterCard insisted / forced Lola to enter a year early. Lola only had a preliminary chassis from 1995 to work with and it was hurried into preparedness for the start of 1997 along with some aged and underpowered Ford V8s. Additionally MasterCard's sponsorship plan was to fund the team based on the revenues from a special F1 / Lola team credit card membership fee. And guess what, MasterCard never came up with any funds for Lola and as such bankrupted Eric Broadley's operation.

But yes, let's keep using them as the punchline for a joke.

Wasn't it based on a Lola chassis tested by Allan McNish in '93?

Yes that chassis that McNish tested, it was 1995 though

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lola_T95/30

The 1993 chassis was run by Scuderia Italia during the 93 F1 season with that awful Chesterfield livery, and wasn't very good.

Must be why I was thinking it was '93 then.

Lola were a very good contructor, it's just a shame they never had the same success in F1. Just a pole and a single podium.
