I'm not sure the Pirellis are radial tyres. When they re-entered in F1, I think I remember reading that their tyres weren't exactly radial

Teams like Red Bull would never agree to simplified aero rules as they know that their only chance of getting closer to the front comes from the aero, as their Renault will likely never be on par with Mercedes, or even Ferrari

IIRC they have some kind of hybrid (ho ho) between a normal radial and belted bias - certainly looks non-radial on the upper layers:

Well, some execs are probably very annoyed by Merc getting all the glory. Plus with the going away of Bernie, it might become interesting in the future.

don't tell McLaren or they'll go hungry for a new deal

and then Audi will give them a malfunctioning diesel engine

VAG is cutting costs due to the DieselGate. They didn't bother about F1 even when they were full of money, imagine now.....

F1 has no use for a company like VAG(Toyota also realised that). The sales, and profit, of these two companies are huge, head and shoulders above the 3rd largest car company, so they obviously don't need to promote themselves on a "show" like F1. Btw, I'm skeptical of the capacity of things such as F1 in convincing people to buy something.

I bet Honda will not see a drop on their sales despite providing terrible engines to Mclaren, just my guess.

I bet a large number of Honda customers are older people who would be quite happy driving a "slow mobile" a la the 21st Century McLaren-Honda :-)

I explored the relationship of the number of overtakes and TBK ratings (starting from 2013).
It can be said that overtaking predicts (p < . 01) rating:
rating = 0.027*overtake + 4.408. So in order to have rating 9 or higher requires at least 170 overtakes

Image

However, the effect varies from track to track. For example Singapore & Montreal have got worse ratings with more overtaking. Hungaroring clearly sucks without overtaking.

Quantity is not quality, see the Nascar Tandem drafts circa 2011 superspeedways.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who bashed a Montreal race where Hamilton just made a drive by the leader to take it and win the race. And a lot said DRS don't belong to that track.

Last year's Shanghai race had 160'ish overtakes? That's nearly double the next race. I must watch that race again because I don't remember seeing so many.

What that trend line and graphing shows is how emotive voting for races is. Montreal 2014 was good but not great, but voted high thanks to Ricciardo winning and ending Mercedes streak. Hungary 2014 and Austin 2015 were far better. And then Bahrain 2014 should top the lot because of the intensive battle for the win as well as the racing lower down the order.

They probably just accepted the invitation out of courtesy. They'll listen, thank for the invitation and don't enter.
Others probably also gotten an invitation but aren't mentioned.

they said that they meet to discuss the approach on viable consumer technology and so

BMW is up to join Formula-E either and were at the meeting either so quite unlikely that new manufacturers will join

Lots of rumors floating around atm about Honda. Most of them will probably be bogus but where there is smoke there is at least a spark.

- Sauber-Honda for 2018. Deal could be struck soon
- Honda looking into works team. Force India being named as the one being bought.
- McLaren and Honda breaking up.

IMHO the first seems likely. Rest just typical "we need to fill the papers/website" bogus.

Stefano Domenicali(now Lamborghini's CEO) is the one sent by VAG to the meeting but, as expected, AutoBild has VAG claiming that their entrance on F1 is not being considered.

This is interesting:
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-s ... 87904/?s=1

Ferrari easily the most popular, Mclaren still quite popular while Mercedes is only on par with Red Bull.

Could anyone, please, tell Bottas to stop talking sense but rather just jump on the bandwagon and go with the: "Oh no, F1 is doomed" attitude?
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-o ... 87593/?s=1

Finally, don't expect Red Bull taking it to the other two, at least until Canada.

Bottas says, “The circuits with really long straights will be very good racing because also the slipstreaming has a bigger effect now, and DRS does too with these rear wings."

Whilst that does seem to make sense, from what I saw at Melbourne, on the rare occasions where a car did make it into the DRS zone, they didn't seem to close up at all down the straights. Other circuits might be an improvement, but it's still going to be very difficult to pass without a big car or tyre advantage.

DRS zone should start at the very beggining of the straight in China, it wouldn't work but at least cars could reach a greater top speed
