Well the details are quit simply insane, just have a look at the front suspension contact point. They weren't kidding when they said that they were aggressive with the new car:

I'm not a technical expert so I'll just ask it like this: is the top-thingy not directly connected to the wheel and only indirectly through that thing below it? Looks weird to me but awesome to see such a creation.

I think you are correct of I understood you correctly. The mounting point of the upper wishbone to the upright is no longer within the rims, but located more inwards and higher. They could move the suspension upwards to reduce the effect on aero and it presumably pulls in the top of the wheel a bit while cornering, giving them more surface area of the tyre on the road. But let's see if they can convert it into pace :)

Regarding the wheel base comments: is it actually longer than the years before?

It seems to me that it's more a case of optical illusion due to how the tyres are wide and sticking apart, but the main body of the car is very narrow. If the car itself was wider, it wouldn't seem so long.

I could be mistaken though, so we would need figures to compare, keeping in mind that adding 10 or 20cm to a 4m-long object does not count as much visually as the effect described above.

What are you talking about? The cars this year are 2m wide, instead of 1.8m. That's full 20 cm wider.

Mercedes at least has very pushed forward front suspension. See how the front of the a-arms are from tub to wheel.

Compared to SF70H

Compared to W07, which wasn't a short car in the first place.

F2008 vs. 2017. Ferrari isn't even as long as Mercedes W08.

I said main body of the car is narrower, not the wheel width of 2m vs 1.8m ;) Thanks for the rest of the comparison though, was informative. The wheelbase is a ton longer indeed :o

Based on my limited knowledge of how cars react, these will be very stable at high speed worners but might be a bitch to manouever around Rascasse or the Hotel hairpin.

with these long wheelbase optimistic maneuvers from drivers like Stroll at Monaco will be very fun. just imagine him trying to pass someone at Loews

Best car on grid. I really hate this T- wing but I am really interested in the front suspension set up.
