Classic Rosberg, not surprised at all.

He is that kind of person that never wins againts you, and the only time he does it then he doesn't play anymore. Respect? not exactly the word I would use...

Looks like he just wants a life:

Nico Rosberg wrote:
"This year was extremely tough because I put absolutely everything into it, I didn't leave a stone unturned from Austin last year really where I suffered a lot after that loss," he said, in reference to when Lewis Hamilton was crowned 2015 champion at the US GP.

"So I pushed like crazy in all directions and along with everybody who was involved, which was also my family, a lot of sacrifices.

"My wife, for example, every time I was home she understood that I needed to rest so I never did any nights, I never took care of my little daughter, I never did any difficult things.

"She was always there to support to make it as easy as possible and that's just one example of the commitment we all put into it.

"I've achieved this childhood dream and I'm not willing to do that sort of commitment again for another year and I'm not interested in coming fourth or whatever.

"I'm a fighter and I want to win. I'm not interested to do that again, I don't want to do it again.

"So I've decided to follow my heart and my heart has told me to stop there and call it a day and go onto other things."

I think this might honestly be the most ballsy thing he has ever done. Who else quit after winning the title? Prost? I know Mansell did, but that wasn't through choice...

I was half expecting one of them to leave the team and move elsewhere, but certainly didn't expect to see Nico retiring completely.

In terms of excitement, it would be great if another top driver took the seat, and gave us some more fireworks, but I'm thinking a safe number 2/rookie will be more Mercedes' thinking. Wehrlein could be interesting, as he's driven very well in the Manor. Not sure if one of the Red Bull guys would risk a move, as they're supposed to have a good car for 2017.

That's the most surprising thing to happen in F1 all year. I respect him for doing it, he probably knows he won't win another title so to stop at the top is something not many can do. Schumacher did not achieve it, Button and Massa stayed way too long and by the looks of things Alonso is not going to end on top (hope to be wrong on that one, he deserves a good car)

He will be remembered in F1 history for doing this. Retiring as champion. I hope an exciting driver takes his seat. Wehrlein is just a bit too meh for me

After the last three years, a safe number two driver will be like a lottery win for Toto

Wonder if Mercedes will let Lewis have a veto on potential team mates?

He'll probably want his dog in that seat, or god so he can always have divine power in the car behind him and be blessed all the time

For people who like to pick apart anything. Could also be hidden meaning that the Mercedes next year might not be as good.

I think this might be a part of it. Red Bull are already very confident compared to this time last year...

Yeah, he has been 100% clear about his motivation - to win the world championship. Job done, so he is done. What's disappointing about that?

It is the age that buggers me. He can still achieve a lot, but apparently can't be motivated anymore. And that is my personal disappointment in him.

Good for him, nice to see someone put his family above all else.

Max Chilton presently on the BBC offering his wisdom on how it feels to leave the sport while you're on top....

Oh wait

well that escalated quickly

his father years after retirement said he still had something to give and regretted retiring in 1986. Hope he doesn't see that retirement as a mistake, he is good enough to develop and race a good car

He hasn't said it's a lack of motivation though, just that he has a family now and wants to spend time with them instead.
