I've always wondered why have they done that with the lines?I know they can run multiple configurations of the track, does that have something to do with it? If its top cover the acres of asphalt why not paint it a deep green to at least kinda make it look like grass. And is that a random an arbitrary gravel trap there on the inside?

Its high grip asphalt, similar to grip tape, so when a car is spinning off with the brakes locked the friction coefficient of the road increases so the tyres grip more, so they can hit the wall at 0.7km/h less. Refer Wurz's testing crash in the McLaren for a demonstration of how they do fuck all.

Also means if a car runs off and runs through those grip areas they have the same effect the diamond cut surface at Indy had on the Michelin tyres.

Ok great thanks for the explanation....but couldn't they paint it in something else that doesn't cause a seizure?

They could paint it green and cream, for imaginary grass and gravel

But knowing FOM, they'll probably cover it in one huge Rolex CG ad during the race

Pretty neat thing to have happen

Quote:
Auckland University's Engineering faculty building has just been renamed The Bruce McLaren Centre in honour of Bruce McLaren's historical ties with New Zealand.

There is one annual award given to an engineering student attending this faculty to travel to the United Kingdom and spend 12 weeks at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking and see world-class UK technological expertise in action.

In fairness, gravel and tarmac are equally shit at slowing a car that is mostly off the ground :p

Although yeah, he would've travelled less far after the big impact in gravel. High-grip paint is less effective on a carbon undertray than tyres.

Yeah, no, fuck Paul-Ricard. It's not even closer to travel there from Paris than to many other European track like Silverstone, Spa, Barcelona, Monza... so I'm fine with no French GP unless they go to a real track that isn't an insult to everything nice on this planet.

If only Damon Hill had had the same idea.

(Mind you, Ralf for spa 98....)

I'm guessing he knows about how little work merc have done on next year's car and doesn't fancy not winning any more.

So, does this mean Alonso, Ricciardo and Vettel are scrabbling to get out of their current contracts?

When a friend of mine posted it on facebook I first went and check the actual autosport.com site to verify because I expected it to be a hoax site.

What's going to be the biggest surprise of 2016 season?

I believe this question has been answered.
