Turns out this is not representative of 2017 aero - they actually added skirts to the tray to simulate the increased downforce. Looks tast.

The rear wing is still too high, go back to 2008 wing and should be ok

Slightly off-topic, but Channel 4 have found this pic of Vettel testing 2017 tyres and proto-17 aero today:

It looks alright, but we all know the racing is going to back to early-2000s standards of cars washing out when they get within 2 seconds of the one ahead :(

I can't help but always think this picture is a screenshot from a game. Maybe Gran Turismo or Froza. It just doesn't look real :D

Rear wing will be lower; this Ferrari rear wing has just a 2017 spec width but still a 2016 spec height.

Why don't they just add these skirts to the regulations to add that extra downforce they want without hurting close racing furthermore?

the car looks good, but there's no way to have the same front wing to all teams?

Don't know if this has been posted already, but the aero on this car is 100% not what we will get next year:

Image

Craig Scarborough provided the drawing and the following notes:

  • Track widened to 200cm, which is pre-1998 width. It isn't clear from his wording if this is solely the tyres or also widened suspension - the drawing suggests the former
  • Front wing widened by 200mm so that it retains the same proportion relative to the tyres
  • Rear wing 150mm wider and lower
  • Both wings swept back, purely for visual effect
  • Wider floor to match increased track, and longer, wider and slightly taller diffuser
  • Bargeboards

So basically they are balancing out the good changes with meh ones. And by failing to reduce the complexity of the front wings, probably failing to improve the racing.

Oh, can you just imagine? These fat tyres, simple wings, and a big-ass skirted tunnel like the old WSR cars. Gary Anderson would probably die happy.

I like the look of the wider tyres but I'm still concerned about the effect the rest of the changes will have on the racing.

I'm also a little disappointed that i've heard some within F1 talk about how the 2017 cars will basically drive like "Big F3 cars" where they will have a lot more grip than power & drivers will be able to floor the throttle with little issue at the apex of most corners.

Going back to cars that look like they are pretty much on rails isn't something i'm really looking forward to seeing as I like seeing the cars move about a bit.

Given that both aero and mechanical grip are going to increase, I think that is the only likely outcome :slaphead:

So they are going to make the floor stick out more than the side pod?

I can see that maybe that might be an issue with the little side by side racing we get. Currently if the drivers touch eachother the contact is usually wheel to side pod, but with that its going to be wheel to the floor first as it sticks out more than the side pod. Being low down there is only one outcome I can see. Its going to cut the side wall of the tyre.

I just don't like the way the make only the floor wider, it should be wider sidepods too

It seems with the tires further apart from the car, the car following it will deal with less dirty air than now.

But, if it's harder to pass, that could be a good thing, as nowadays drivers don't even try to defend anymore. Overtaking must be possible, but has to be a challenge nonetheless.

The floor is going to be the same width relative to the tyres, so won't really be more exposed. However, you are right about the sidepods. Given that the sidepods can be as wide as the silhouette formed by the floor, there is no reason why they can't extend them.

The tyres are physically larger, so will create more drag and probably more turbulence. Add in the larger front and rear wings, all increased by more or less the same proportion, and it's only realy the looks that change :slaphead:

cba what the cars look like, they should be able to race each other.

If it turns out to be shit, which most of the drivers and engineers say it will be, it might be time to give up on F1.
