Any word on how this crash went down? I know one guy was already sitting in the runoff area but how/why did the second car reach him at such a high speed. Just shit timing and luck on a failure of some sort?

Yeah, it sounds like he hit the barriers and got that sudden stop while being thrown back on track, tyre barries usually do that. And if it was before the last turn, not much to react there....

This is an example of what I'm thinking, more about how the guy must have stopped and got back on track. Warning as it is a fatal crash:

Eyewitness account from comments at racer.com

Quote:
Paul Bordieri • 10 hours ago

So we were standing at the bridge at Turn 1. And moments before. The Aston Martin missed the turn in. + started down the Escape Road. He briefly turned right to go onto the grass and reenter the track butt The Prudent racer went down the Escape road instead by turning left. 2 seconds later it appears the Bentley came down the home straight with no brakes. Slid into the armco barrier in what looked like an attempt to scrub speed with no brakes. The rest of the story has already been published I'm sorry to say.

TC/TCA/TCB does nothing for me, tbh.

Palmer hit de le Torre in the runoff of Turn 1. de le Torre was stationary at the time, and Palmer hit him full song. Palmer then launched OVER de la Torre, over the tire barrier, and ended up in the woods on the other side….that’s the main reason it took so long to get him out. My wife actually works at Hartford Hospital, and all she will say is that it’s not good. She can’t tell me anymore & I’m not asking.

...

June 1, 2016 at 5:51 pm

Cont. People reported that de la Torre just got hot into Turn 1, and the yellow for that area was out. It seems that by some bizarre stroke of fate, Palmers’ brakes failed coming into 1, and he hit de la Torre, who was set up like a launching ramp at that point. The was no braking at all by Palmer, which is fueling the no-brakes scenario. You ALWAYS brake hard into Turn 1 @ LRP…always. They covered the cars with tarps before bringing them back out into the open, so there aren’t any (that I know of), pictures of the damage to the cars. But I’m told that they were both just destroyed. So, that’s where we are right now.

Watching the CBSSN coverage of the race now and they barely mentioned the accident at all.

They really didnt, the livestream coverage is essentially what shows up on CBS Sports and there was hardly even any mention of it then. It really feels like PWC is trying to cover up that it happened entirely. It took them I think close to 4-5 hours to even acknowledge there was an incident had happened on twitter that was delaying the schedule for the day.

I really like Pirelli World Challenege, I used to think it was great, but I feel like they're starting to run into trouble. Theres been a lot of internal controversy it seems, the GT numbers have started dropping off, GTS is still doing ok, touring car has dropped off a little, especially TCB.
