I guess the other cars will have no problem following McLaren as the engine can't help

They'll probably get almost as much running in today as they did last winter.

Almost - apparently they beat the mileage for the entire first test last year :flag:

(Complex front wing + dirty air = can't follow other cars) = 90% of the reason why the 2017 rule set will fail to deliver the results they want.

Back in the days it was a the whole flap wich bended when they did a wing adjustment.
Am i correct that on this photo they adjust the top 2 of the 10 flaps to get more or less downforce?
Still i find it a amazing achievement that hey can get so much downforce from these little winglets on top of each other but aesthetic wise its meh...

I think the rule since 2009 was that there's only one adjustable part on each side of the nosecone. Something like this.

But then of course, just like with double-diffuser, teams noticed a loophole, that they could use winglets and split the two wing profile in multiple pieces, bend them, add vertical supports/wind directors. And so the evolution has bring us here.

So that's what happens when you leave the loopholes and let the team do evolution over a rule. From engineering point of view, this is good thing. But racing itself it has taken away close racing because of the design being more vulnerable for dirty air.

So Mercedes have won 16 races in each of the last 2 seasons and people think they're all of a sudden gonna lose based on the first day of testing?

Oh dear god my eyes! That 2009 Renault was such an eye sore. Can't decide whether or not the dick/stepped nose cars were more preferable.

Nah, that car was awful-looking even next to its contemporaries. 2009 wasn't that bad of course:

(The Williams was pretty tast as well)

Yeah Mercedes drove the most laps of all teams yesterday. They are already working on reliability while others are still working out their new systems.

Apparently there will be a new qualifying format for this year: a one hour session and the slowest driver after a certain deadline will drop out, then the next one a few minutes later and so on.

Quote:
Q1
-16 minutes duration

- After 7 minutes, slowest driver is eliminated

- Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag

- 7 drivers eliminated, 15 progress to Q2

Q2

- 15 minutes duration

- After 6 minutes, slowest driver eliminated

- Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag

- 7 drivers eliminated, 8 progress to Q3

Q3

- 14 minutes

- After 5 minutes, slowest driver eliminated

- Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag

- 2 drivers left in final 1 minute 30 seconds

Time ballast

There are also suggestions that the format could be combined with a time ballast proposal, where the championship leader has certain time added to his official time.

Teams have also agreed to delay a final decision on 2017 bodywork rules.

*sigh*

Slightly more complex than that;

Will keep the track active at all times, at least.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.
