Seems like Phoenix is confirmed, judging by what Mark Miles said at the championship banquet.

While the search for a new director of competition is still ongoing, Mark Miles will be working with the series more.

Probably just typical political bullshit from a city.

It's people like this that kill races though:

Quote:
But others indicated they were willing to play hardball. Council member Amy Foster said that the city has progressed in visibility in the past decade and now has its own momentum. She said she wasn't sure the Grand Prix was "the only thing" that made the city relevant these days.

"I do feel, frankly, that we're a different city than when this race started," she said.

In other words she thinks the race is irrelevant. Yes, St. Petersburg is such a great city.

Notability wise, maybe she was thinking she was in Russia.

Really though, nobody gives a fuck about St Petersburg, Florida outside of a small segment of racing fans.

St Pete is a shitty and overrated circuit. I've never understood the fascination. If that circuit is dropped and is replaced by Phoenix or Road America (which we know is already confirmed), then that's a good thing.

I remember when it was proposed for champcar,it was mooted to be the "new Cleveland " because of the airport start finish straight. Hardly.

Even during the height of my champcar fanboyism there was was a massive "is that it?" Feeling about the track. Didn't shed any tears when it defected to the irl and they opened up the kerbs to make the irls first ever road course race have lap times that couldn't be shown up by champcar from 2 years previous.

How it managed to bag the prestigious opening slot for so long I'll never know

It's unfortunate that they use so little of the airport. I can think of better "theoretical" circuits for the St. Petersburg area, but none really downtown (where I'm sure the council wants to be) that don't involve closing both the runways.

I imagine weather is a big reason for the "opening" start date, same with why Homestead usually gets early or late races, and the Daytona July race (before the lights) used to start at 10AM. February and November is pretty nice down here. Summer, not so much.

Running an Indycar race in St. Pete in July would be as stupid as, er, Indycar in Houston in July or Indycar at Fontana in July... :p

while St. Pete isn't the best of street circuits, it has to stay. The last thing IndyCar needs right now is more lost races/events. Since 2010, IndyCar has lost 18 races that were either on the schedule previously or was scheduled but later canceled (including next season's lost events of Fontana and NOLA)

Or it could be a way to get extra testing without using up their allocation with Indycar. Who knows, maybe they want to have Daly at some point in 2016? If it isn't just some demo run that is.

He's had what, one season in Indy Lights?

I can hear it now:

Scott Goodyear: "Amazing Indy 500 rookie Max Chilton is a veteran of Formula One, following in the steps of Nigel Mansell and Juan Montoya."

Or something like that.
