The point of the test is purely to evaluate the aesthetics. That's it. Performance and other (actually important) will be evaluated at other times, if at all.

This "test" just shows how utterly fucked up F1's priorities are.

I see there will be a 18 inch tyre test...
I have nothing against the test...
But did they think that trough??
I mean some F1 car needs to have completley new suspensions and brakes, arms and everything to just be able to drive with those bigger rims!!! And that wont be cheap either!!!
This aint like on a road car, where you go from 15 to 18 inch and everything is allright..
Or will they simply just put a 18 inch on a 13 inch suspension?

I think there has to be the right suspension, brakes etc. for those bigger tyres..

If anything won't the tires be smaller? It's not like their diameter will go up as well.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Also, testing 'for aesthetic' purposes now is probably an understatement. Even if they use a completely safe compound, the data gathered will help them to product a proper tyre - Hembery has said as much.

F1 struggles enough with a lack of road-relevance, so I don't see the harm in bringing the wheels and tyres into the 20th century, at least.

I don't get it why F1 must always have some "road-relevance". Isn't being the pinnacle of motor racing enough?

I think it helps manufacturers if they can carry over some technology to their road cars. Think thats one of the arguments for the current popularity of WEC.

Because the competition arm of a manufacturer inevitably has to justify the obscene cost to the board. Even Ferrari.

So if Kimi's out of the next race, who replaces him? Bianchi, DLR or Rigon?

(apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere - I've just got in)

DLR is the reserve driver, but I'm not sure how much that matters.

Don't think so Paul. I think those ties were severed when Kobayashi signed for Caterham.

I fucking wish.

I'm 90% sure that if Ferrari need someone else at Hockenheim that Jules' number is top of the speeddial. PdlR would look like Badoer did, especially with the new way that these cars have to be driven.

Could this actually be the end of Kimi? In the interview he did with Brundel in the British build up he said that he would walk away mid season if his desire left him. He has looked pretty dejected and this big accident might just be the catalyst.

When was the last time that a direct F1 technology made it into mass produced road cars (not exotic)? I can only think of the turbos, the radial tyre and the flappy paddle gearbox (but that is kind of exotic), maybe carbon fibre. F1 has never been about getting the technology into road cars (that's what touring cars are for) rather it has always been about the prestige. Win on Sunday and sell on Monday.

Yeah but based on recent rules changes that prestige is fading fast.

Buxton said Kimi was good to go for Hockenheim on the NBC broadcast.
