Sorry to bring the ever-tedious engine noise argument into this thread, but that shows the difference between a quiet engine that sounds great, and a quiet engine that sounds terrible. I don't dislike the F1 engines because they're quiet, I dislike them because they sound like cack.

That Audi sounds fantastic. Real weight behind it, despite the lack of volume.

I tried to explain this to my Dad as well at the weekend, but all I got was the usual waving of arms followed by "you just don't like change"

Mind you he is half deaf, so he probably couldn't tell the difference between the two anyway.

I laughed an unproportional amount at this sentence.

Shit, I really should stop browsing TBK and Pornhub at the same time. It's ruining my vocabulary...

I've always thought that kind of video gives very misleading idea of the sound. If there was pretty much any petrol engined car following or infront of the Audi, you wouldn't much at all from the Audi. Secondly, isn't most of the "jet engine" sound just transmission noise, which is obviously present on any car but just can't be heard from the exhaust noise. Plane/jet comparison is stupid imho. Jet destroys ears, Audi doesn't.

Well it's mostly differential noise (which increases with speed, where as the gearbox noise increases with revs) and simply the noise of the air being pushed out of the way. But you're right about what happens with other cars. The Audi alone on track sounds like that video. I've heard it during free practice at Le Mans. But if there's another car even remotely close to it, those sounds are muffled and hard to hear.

However in 2013 the Audi sounded completely unique as you could hear the flywheel spinning up under braking and it was *AWESOME*. You could also hear the car going over rumble strips - something other cars engines drowned out. Whilst that video isn't a true representation of the Audi track side during a race, IMO it is even better trackside. It just sounds unique and awesome. Unlike the 908 which sounded like a damn tractor.

28 cars on the Spa entry list. Too bad about RAM's late withdrawal. Also, of course, no 'Lotus' to be seen. Guess that's a scrap for Le Mans as well.

Something I have noticed is how WEC's popularity has increased quite significantly

Every time that pops up one of these videos, there is quickly lots of comments and views and claims like "It's fair to say WEC is the king/pinnalce of motorsports now" and "These cars are so amazing" and etc. Even their's sound rarely gets bashed

Can you blame them? The cars looks so feisty and fast as a racing car should be 8)

Btw, who's going to Spa?

5 cars retired from Le Mans: 2 Millennium Racing LMP2 and 3 Astons (two works cars and the Craft Racing entry).

Each and every reserve car gets on the start list. Let's hope in no further withdrawals.

Dont feel sad by the Aston withdrawal. Better focus on the real contenders than on quantity.
