Caterham have continually flattered to deceive despite having far better resources than their nearest competitors. To have half a Red Bull and barely beat Marussia is next to pathetic. Especially considering how much they've hyped themselves up over the years.

At least they haven't reviewed drivers like Max Chilton (altough Marcus Ericsson is not really a stand out).

whom, in his defence, was the only reason Caterham finished ahead of Marussia in 2012. It was also the closest Caterham (and the 'new teams') came to scoring a point.

Also, there was this:

I love Kobayashi but I'd rather he stayed in WEC.

Yes, they screwed up. But remember that in the 2009-13 regulations, once you got behind it was very difficult to catch up. Marussia has done an incredible job but remember that Caterham's 2013 car was effectively the 2012 model ever so slightly tweaked.

My point is that they've disappointed me - there have been reasons for their problems - but 2014 is the proper acid test. They should be in the midfield and there are few excuses for them not to be there.

TBH with Marussia now getting Ferrari engines I expect them to be the top runner of the backmarkers. If you keep in mind Marussia was able to bring the fight with Cosworths, I expect them to step up their game (although with the new V6's the ranking of engine manufacturers is yet unknown).

I never had any news about him since his terrible accident at Elkhart Lake.

His career never recovered from that. He ran for some half-arsed teams in ALMS (including the Rocketsports Jaguar) for a while, but never really re-established himself. It's a sad story. He was a great driver in his day, and was unfairly dumped by Toyota in 2004.

I was thinking the same thing when I read it, was trying to trace back the last time I remembered him racing and that accident was sadly the last I heard of him.

It was a bit Zanardi-ish too as he'd just won his first champcar race after his F1 sojourn when it happened, such a shame.
Another guy who felt more at home in American racing than the corporate serious world of F1.

It's sad that his career was effectively ended back then, but at the same time, he was very lucky to survive at all, let alone race again. Judging by what Dr Hartstein has said recently, he only had about a 10% chance of surviving when they got him to the hospital

Do you have a source for this announcement, by the way? I've tried searching and can't find anything

That's not correct. Da Matta won in return season after only a handful of races in. In 2006 when he had this accident he hadn't won, but had just achieved a season's best 2nd place at the race prior.

That said, I agree with your sentiments. Very unfortunate.

I first remember watching him in British F3 in the mid-nineties.

da Matta was one of the greats, you can see by his sucess

he owes his talent to the father, a legendary driver in Brazil called Toninho da Matta, won 14 national championships racing touring cars
