If it's anything like the oval racing scene in the UK, it's better to own a track and run it down (maybe even let it run minor events that draw no spectators of note but keep the big crowd draws away from it) than sell it and have someone else buy it, make a success of it and potentially become a rival to you in the long term

Didn't they only buy it in the first place to move the race to Texas?

There's been talk this week of Keselowski moving to Roush next year. Also might be something of a partial ownership role in it for him as well.

So... more 20-25 car "parking lot" pileups then.

You know the only way to make plate racing safer?

Not necessarily increasing speeds, but make multi-car breakaways a thing.

Or, you know...bring back tandems. Yes, we'll bitch about how someone has to sacrifice a win to make sure the guy he wants to win win, but the only serious wreck I can think of is when Carl Edwards aggressively blocked Brad Keselowski and...well, you know what happens next.

Just tell the drivers to get the memo then, cause they sure are doing a good job at driving reckless for a while now.

Anyway, the 2020 Daytona 500 had less HP on the cars and the racing was very good all day long. So, looking forward to it.

Just one thing I didn't get, when they said that they were removing the wicker from the spoiler, what is that?

They're basically removing the Gurney Flap off the spoiler. That wicker creates more drag to punch a bigger hole in the air, thus allowing the draft to have an even greater effect.

The only solution is to take those tracks off the schedule, or lower the banking.

Not saying NASCAR is ever going to do this, or even should do it, but it feels like if they took the plates off, they'd have a few more single car blowovers where the car dissapates energy by barrel rolling down the backstraight (or in this zero grass era, just blowing over onto its roof and staying there) and a hell of a lot less big ones

They put on the plates to slow the cars down to prevent blowovers. I get that, a barrell roll in a 80s/90s car must've been a scary prospect.
But now the cars are freaking tanks, a flip isn't gonna do anything to a car with a strong roll bar and the earnheardt bar and all that safety stuff
The only risk these days is getting twatted when upside down.

And it's not like pack racing and pack crashing doesn't send cars upside down in other ways too, so if they stopped pack racing, there'd be no chance of Newman style crashes where cars get hit in the air.

But NASCAR is long past its addiction to pack racing these days. Weaning it off of it is impossible, there'd be no other racing left.

I don't get the drivers whining that their cars shouldn't turn over (maybe seek a different line of work) but I do get the concern about debris or cars going into the stands. They have to keep speeds at a reasonable level to mitigate the risk of that.

I don't care about whether they're doing 180 or 200 really, I just want to see actual racing. Make the cars less aerodynamic, less glued to the ground and for Gods sake don't take the Gurney flap off, you need something to counteract the dirty air that kills racing nowadays. Oh, and fucking penalise blocking already.

The plates came to be because Bobby Allison blew a tire at a high rate of speed, which led to the blowover, so really, tire durability and resilience are the reasons why we have plates. I do agree that we need to spread them out, but that will never happen.

i was at the sonoma race last weekend in turn 3. there was a historic trans-am race in the morning with old comaros, mustangs, and challengers (and a couple amc javelins). seeing the low downforce cars sliding sideways over the crest in turn 3, and then watching the drivers rotate the cars around turn 4 was way more exciting than the completely planted cup cars later in the afternoon. they almost didn't look like they were even trying. i really wish the cup cars would go back to less than 1000lbs of downforce
