Ricciardo was a bit too expensive for Renault I assume, and Mclaren won't pay him as much, but Mclaren seems to have much bigger potential go close the gap to the top3 than Renault.

so Renault might be open to pay drivers?

Or just sell the operation to pay driver's dads like Latifi or Mazepin?

Ricciardo's move will make McLaren the second team to mimic the old driver number allocations after Caterham in 2014.

Williams with Stroll and Massa doesn't count as #18 would go to the team in 9th and #19 to the team in 10th.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Three months ago and that Drive to Survive episode about Sainz and Ricciardo felt like a stretch. And now we have more of the two - what a turnaround for Sainz!

Also, this might be the biggest sign of change at McLaren since Dennis left the team. I would never imagine such a driver line-up in the old McLaren.

And Sainz looks like a Trojan Horse for Renault. Went to the team as compensation for Renault powering McLaren, moves to McLaren to beat his former team and now leaves the door open for McLaren to poach Renault's driver.

Hmm that went very quick. There is then one space left at Renault.
I would not be surprised if Alonso takes it. And Vettel well retirement. I dont see any chance in staying in F1.
He has 3 kids and big farm i think so he wont be bored at home with his family

4 World Championships and waning motivation. The man has nothing left to prove.

Damn, the team's wasted no time in getting their announcements out. The boredom from the pandemic must've gotten to them. Kinda wish they had dragged it out at least a few more weeks to allow for some fun speculation...

Didn't Renault show some good pace at this year's winter testing? I would laugh my ass off if they start racking up podium finishes while McLaren fades off slowly. It's VERY unlikely... but so is everything happening right now, and so has been the fate of many midfield teams in the late years.

And yeah, silly seasons aren't nearly as fun when detached from any on-track action. It's actually silly now.

Just thinking about Ricciardo's journey the last couple years. Smart to move on from Red Bull, as tough as I'm sure the decision was, seeing as the team was being completely moulded around Verstappen. Collecting a handy pay check from Renault in the meantime wasn't a bad idea. Now people are talking about how his opportunity at a top team has ended after Ferrari's snub. But now that he'll be racing with Mercedes power, you gotta imagine that he'll be Wolff's first option in a couple years when Hamilton calls it quits, with Ricciardo still being in his early 30s. Mercedes 2023: Ricciardo + Russell, sounds like a pretty decent succession plan to move on from their current lineup.

McLaren have been gradually improving the last few years. A Mercedes engine and some new regulations to come... It could be a very smart move.

I was wondering Ricciardo move could be a pivotal point to Renault's project as well. They spent huge money in him to see him announcing his departure one year later - looks like a massive dent in the project and I'm not sure they are in a position to make a big offer to attract a big name.

Or maybe Renault pulled the plug and Ricciardo took the best deal he could.

That or one specific Spanish ex-driver of theirs is going to show up once again.

Renault should build a rocket and shoot Cyril to the moon. Once they get rid of that diarrhea waterfall they can start to look forward. Or just pull the fuck out so they can buy the team back in a few years time.

I'll take any racing that we can get this year. However, the end of the calendar is pretty lame.

I'm still not even sure how this is going to happen. A lot of countries are going to quarantine anybody entering. Will F1 be exempt, or will it count as quarantine if everybody stays within the circuit and has no outside contact?
