Rumours about Mercedes leaving have been going since 2016 or so....

Still, If Penske came in and continued their success, how much would that piss off Haas?
Probably enough for him to quit tbh

And take Grosjean with him?

You can also imagine Stroll. "DADDY! My team sucks again, buy me another new one!"

There has yes however a few points:

1) they're committed to F1 until the end of next year through the concord thing (as all the teams are).
2) they've had no role in shaping the new rules (unlike the present ones which they practically wrote) and this has pissed them off.
3) Germany has I think just entered recession and spending exorbitant amounts of money "playing" in F1 might not go down too well at home.
4) end of 2020 is a break year that they can withdraw from F1 without penalty.

Normally I'd take your view in that "we've heard this all before" but this time it's probably best not to take that view.

plus Toto is itching to succeed Ross Brawn once again. If that happens, Mercedes is out, just supplying

I believe that is a good thing, as manufacturers tend to ruin the show

So help me out. I recall that in the late 80s, early 90s drivers would go out on brand new tires. So new they still had stickers on them.

Am I misremembering this or not?
Also didn’t they call them “stickers”?

You’re right. I remember it happening also. James Hunt even commented on it during the 1993 Brazilian GP.

The old PS game Formula 1 97, as you left the pits on new tyres, they had stickers on for the first few corners, until they wore off.

That was one epic game!

Yeah, it pretty much ended around the time the grooved slicks were introduced

I remember them having stickers for at least part of 1998 too, placed awkwardly off to one side.

I think their phasing out might have been less to do with the type of tyre and more to do with the relevant data being computerized. The tyres just have barcodes on them now.

/Edit: Probably also disappeared after 1998 because it was more of a Good Year thing than an F1-specific thing.

I have a vague memory of stickers on tyres being used more recently than 98, but I'm not sure how to search for it.

But brand new, unscrubbed sets are still coloquially known as sticker tyres.

I liked how they used chalk to mark the tire directions in old CART/Indycar

In a few years time there'll be people wondering "remember when the tyres used to have an almost wet sheen on them for 10 seconds or so when they were first put on?"

For the record I think that looks pretty cool too, not even sure why...

it's a nice effort from Pirelli to show which tires are new and those who got wear, way better than those stupid graphics showing tire condition that confuses the viewer and the broadcasters

The McLaren MP4/4 driven by Brundle last weekend, had sticker tyres.

If any F1 driver today were to spin on those tires I'm sure they would blame the "loss of grip" on the fact that there was a sticker on one part of the tire lol
