For all the things Grand Am did wrong (nonsensical yellows for nothing that lasted forever, weird technical regs etc,) I'm still going to miss it. It did produce some pretty good racing from time to time if you were capable of getting beyond the "OMG ACO REGS ONLY" mindset and I really enjoy going to the 6 Hours Of The Glen.

Hmm.

Give me 2hr 45m and a choice between a NASCAR race at a 1.5 mile cookie-cutter or a Grand Am race at a tight and twisty street circuit and it's a rather easy choice.



Obviously I would watch both anyway, but the Grand Am races were more often than not rather hairy to watch, even if this was a little artificial due to lapped traffic.

Grand Am sounded very nice too. 8)

I love(d) Grand-Am. Fantastic cars in the final generation as well. I'm a bit sad to see it go, but hopefully the ALMS combo works out. Giving them a chance at least!

Today at Daytona, Michael Shank Racing with Driver Colin Braun attempted to break Bill Elliott's record for the fastest lap ever turned at Daytona. They succeeded with an official lap of 222.014 MPH in a DP car with a Ford Ecoboost engine in it.

Dega is actually banked two degrees more and .166 miles longer than Daytona.

Somehow, I don't find it that impressive to beat a 26 year old record set by a big, heavy stock car by only that much in a modern day sports car. Image

I think a Cup car minus the restrictor plate would run very close to that lap, if not faster.

Still would be cool to see video of the lap. Initially a friend and I were going to drive over to watch (they said the Oldfield grandstands would be open) but turns out they decided to close it to the public.

Here's a short clip through the tri-oval. That's definitely hauling ass.

Back in 2004 when Rusty drove around Dega unrestricted, he ran 216 mph average without much tweaking. I bet they could touch 230 with today's cars easily.

IIRC, Rusty was topping out at around 228 at dega but was backing off in the turns because he was afraid the tires wouldn't handle it.

I'm sure a properly tweaked cup car could easily beat that lap.
