Bernard to announce IndyCar schedule on SPEED's "Wind Tunnel"
September 24, 2012
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said Monday morning via Twitter that he will reveal the 2013 series schedule on next week's Wind Tunnel show on SPEED, which airs at 9 p.m. Eastern.

"We look forward at releasing the schedule live on @SPEEDWindTunnel next Sunday night." he wrote.

Bernard, who originally set an early September date for release, confirmed at Baltimore the schedule would be revealed after a Sept. 20 board of directors meeting and, at Fontana, set a hard deadline of Oct. 1 for the schedule to come out. As next Sunday is Sept. 30, it will fall before that deadline. Bernard has stated he wants 19 races for the 2013 season.

I really don't want them to go to Reliant Park. It's one of the most boring street tracks in the US...not too far behind San Jose. :yuk:

They need a race in Portland or Vancouver or maybe even a street race in Seattle. No more races on the east coast dammit.

Anyway, here is the 2012 schedule minus Edmonton with Pocono, Kentucky and Houston added on which leaves room for two races. I'm guessing one of those will be the Providence race and the other might be the Fort Lauderdale one. I hope they add another oval though.

1. st. petersburg
2. birmingham
3. long beach
4. sao paulo
5. indianapolis
6. belle isle
7. texas
8. milwaukee
9. iowa
10. toronto
11. mid-ohio
12. sonoma
13. baltimore
14. fontana
15. pocono
16. kentucky
17. houston
18.
19.

Quote:
Bernard said he expects “a minimum of two” doubleheaders, expected to be in Detroit and Sonoma, Calif. Detroit is hoping to have one race with a standing start and the other with a rolling start. They will be on different days as a means of boosting Saturday attendance.

Sonoma could distinguish its doubleheader with the use of different layouts on different days.

They should bring back something like the Marlboro Challenge. Top ten or twelve drivers in a sprint race with a big purse...too bad Marlboro can't be the sponsor. :x

How about Marlboro Classics Challenge?

Since tobacco bans added, I've always been wondering why Phillip Morris doesn't use this clothing brand for marketing. Is it too obvious to use?

Anyways, I hope that there would be one oval race before the Indy and another one week after the month of May. The 5 races in 5 weeks was also a nice system and I really hope that more of the races would start around same time on same channel.

Because they receive heat over cars with paint schemes that resemble their product. Never mind that.

Firestone back on their way out?
Per RACER.com
Several media reports Tuesday indicated IndyCar may be searching for a new tire partner after the 2014 season, when its current contract with Firestone will end.

A report from MotorSport Magazine in the UK said IndyCar is actively looking, and a name mentioned in a report from the Indianapolis Star of another manufacturer is Continental – currently the sole supplier to Grand-Am's Rolex Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

With its proven track record, history of safety and as open-wheel racing's sole supplier since 2000, Bridgestone Firestone has been one of IndyCar's key partners and widely respected within the industry.

A statement from IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard stopped short of any confirmations, only hinting IndyCar might be open to exploring another partner if it does not choose to re-up with Firestone.

“While IndyCar generally does not comment on the specifics of ongoing negotiations, IndyCar is always exploring what's best for the sport for both the short and long term,” he said. “It is the series' goal to have partners that will provide safe, reliable and high-performance products that are designed to meet and exceed the on-track demands of our sport while creating a platform to leverage and grow the sport through aggressive activation.

“Because the current contract with Firestone to supply tires for the IZOD IndyCar Series will expire following the 2014 race season, IndyCar has been seeking and continues to seek a tire partnership for 2015 and beyond. As the current and historical tire supplier, Firestone has been and continues to be a part of the consideration.”

I'm guessing the idea of more than one tire supplier isn't in the cards.

Mythbusters were at the IMS filming an episode with Ryan Briscoe. Should be aired next year.

Two of my favourite things combined? What kind of myth they are working on?

Myths are:
1. Can an Olympic sprinter accelerate quicker than an IndyCar from a standing start?
2. Can a driver really lose up to 10 pounds in a three-hour race?
3. Can an IndyCar really suck a manhole cover out of the ground?

I would assume its a last generation Dallara for the episode.
