That 2003 race was pretty cool.

It's the first time I learnt about HD properly, and how even stuff filmed in HD looks good on non-HD TVs

Tracy was out on lap 1 because he couldn't just sit in a gravel trap and wait for a tow (as per CC rules) he had to keep flooring it and didn't notice the tyre barrier coming towards him.....

It wasn't quite as eventful as the crazy 2001 race there but it was pretty good.

IndyCar is currently without 2013 TV deal for the UK. Only averaged 16,000 viewers on SKY Sports in 2012. The highest rated race was Sao Paulo with 39,000 viewers. While the Indy 500 only averaged 29,000 viewers.

Series Averages
- 37,000 viewers – GP2 [Feature Race]
- 31,000 viewers – GP2 [Sprint Race]
- 21,000 viewers – GP3 [Feature Race]
- 19,000 viewers – GP3 [Sprint Race]
- 18,000 viewers – GP3 [Qualifying]
- 17,000 viewers – GP2 [Qualifying]
- 16,000 viewers – IndyCar Series
- 14,000 viewers – GP2 [Practice]

They just don't know what Indy means.

Bit of a shame really. Endless repeats of magazine shows no one watches on Sky Sports F1 while Indycar races get shafted on to the red button and struggle to get as many viewers as GP3 qualifying. I imagine there's some clause written into the contract which says nothing to do with Indycar can be shown or advertised on SSF1, but they still do a shit job of advertising it on their other channels. People don't watch it because Sky make no effort to tell them what it is.

I haven't read the article but I can't see how you can compare viewership of primetime European race series against a series that has races during non-social UK hours. Of course they'll be more people watching a race at 11am on a Sunday or 3pm on Saturday in England compared to 11pm on a Sunday night.

After last year they really should try and get more people watching it. They do need to advertise it more because I don't recall seeing any for it.

They'll do plenty of advertising for absolute snoozefest sports.

Primetime is Saturday or Sunday evenings. Most Indycar races are on around 6/7pm Sunday evening. The Indy 500, one of the (if not the) most famous open wheel races in the world, starting around 5pm on a Sunday, should be getting far more than 29,000 viewers.

Perhaps people just don't care.

Most American's don't give a shit about Indycar, why should the English?

The thing is that these statistics doesn't actually base on real views, but more on the poll of selected viewers. They can not really count the real views, but they can take a sampling of, say, 1000 viewers and use it as a base. It's a gallup poll method, that usually is pretty accurate for predicting things, but can also be deceiving.

I mean, take a random 1000 people from UK (enough to form a statistics) and ask them if they watched live the Indy500 that Dan Wheldon won, and you get probably quite small portion of the group of the actual people who actually watched it. Then take all the TV viewers of that moment in UK and you do the math that 29,000 saw the race, while 1,000,000 were watching Emerdale reruns.

I'd say the real statistics could be closer to 290,000 viewers rather than 29,000. I base my conclusion on the fact, that the gallup poll method has failed significantly in Finnish parliament elections now three times in a row. The biggest flaw with the gallup is that it can not foresee a big change that's coming up or when it's used for "marginal" choices. It can get the TOP3 on its places, but when we go down to minorities, it has a bigger forecast error rate.

Do I even need to say that I work with statistics on daily basis? I can get the big volumes nearly spot on everytime, but when I have to play with small portions, I get easily lost, as I don't have enough back-up info for me to work on with.

All in all, I wouldn't count on that number of viewers for Indy500, the sampling versus reality could be very far from each other.

Motor racing is becoming increasingly popular in the UK at the moment. A combination of British success in F1 and good TV coverage has meant more people are watching then there has been for a good number of years - Sky could capitalize on this and get more people watching Indycar. A good example of this is ITV with their BTCC coverage - lots of advertising and extensive coverage has meant BTCC is becoming more and more popular. Like I said though, it's possible (probably likely) that Sky's hands are tied by a certain Mr. Ecclestone when it comes to advertising Indycar on SSF1, so it might not be their fault. It's a shame though, whatever the reason.

It'll either be a season of near successes or an amazing one-off win due to brilliant/lucky strategy for Sato (with a few crashes interspersed) and angry/annoyed Foyt or a season of crashes and very angry Foyt.
