New for this year is a non-championship event held at the Thermal Club in southern California. The layout used will be the 'Twin Palms' variant also used at last year's pre-season test.

There will be 40 laps of action on Sunday - the field is split into two groups, each of which is entered into a 10-lap heat race. The top 6 in each heat go through to the 20-lap main race, which will be run with a break at the halfway point to allow refuelling and setup changes. Which should delight those who don't like fuel saving.

The winning driver collects $500,000 from a total pot of $1.75 million - the original idea was that each driver would be paired with a resident, and the winning resident would also win $500,000. But the resident prize fund has been dropped (presumably no-one was willing to pay $75,000 to enter and risk ending up being paired with Sting Ray Robb or a Dale Coyne car), so only the drivers stand to gain (once the State of California and the teams have taken their share, natch).

Schedule (all times EDT)

Imagine all the places in the US you could have a non-championship event, and they choose a shit hole like this.

I guess Indycar desparately needs cash, since I presume the reason the race is being held here is because the facility can only be used by wealthly people to drive their cars around. I mean, it's not an actual race track in that sense, it's basically a private testing venue for rich people.

Feels like the Pacific Grand Prix at Aida. There' plenty of tracks they could chose from but the one that gave the most money is the one that gets chosen.

It's a typical Alan Wilson design too - heaps of corners with nowhere to really pass. He's like Tilke, but worse. His only good track is Barber.

Too many corners! Track designers keep trying to replicate a genuine road circuit on an enclosed track.

I mean to be fair to the designer, I doubt they ever thought this would be a RACE track and were just designing the most amount of corners to give the rich guys more bang for their buck per lap

That's what happens when you take your millionares trackday circuit and bribe the top tier open wheel series to hold an event there...

It's basically testing with a bonus race at the end of it.

The draw was apparently at random, which perhaps wasn't the best idea, as most of the frontrunners have ended up in group 1 whilst Palou and O'Ward are free to mollywhop group 2.

Watched some of the early testing coverage on Peacock. Course looks really cool. Not sure how it’s gonna race, but I like watching the cars run around the place.

Looks good. I'll always take a proper race track over a street circuit (unless it's Paul Ricard, but luckily Indycar doesn't race in Europe).

Don't wanna be a party pooper, but I must say, track looks fun to drive but not very safe for an actual IndyCar race. Hope we won't see any clearing any of those guardrails.

Some of those walls don't look very secure

This layout reminds me of Gran Turismo 3 Test Track
