I wanna see that first replay again. Looked like Grosjean made the move early enough and Rinus just turned in as if Grosjean wasn’t there.

Grosjean has pitted and looks like he didn't come back out.

All they were doing was radioing the drivers about fuel numbers and telling them how slow to drive to make the end of the race

great

I noticed that when Kirkwood was in 12th or 13th position in the middle of the race, he did his utmost to lift-and-coast to save fuel. He did great at driving slowly to finally finish in 12th position.

Just once I want one team to go "fuck it" and go full send and see how different it is

Tracy did that one year in Toronto in Champcar and he was passing like 2/3 cars a lap because they were saving so much fuel and he had to pass them all and make a gap to make and extra pitstop and it was fun as all hell to watch (though I think that was the year he knocked off his wing in the pits then got caught by a random yellow and ran out of fuel so maybe it's not the best example  )

The races where there's a random yellow and some cars try for the fuel save and some go full out so there's an actual disparity in strategy are the fun ones and work well, it's just everyone's default position is to save fuel and run slowly unless there's a yellow (And everyone running around at 60% of capacity means a yellow is less likely to happen in the first place) so there's no variation

Of course if they had to pit for tyre degredation instead of being dictated by the fuel window, you might have something more interesting more often.
Who is the tyre manufacturer again?
Oh yeah.....they hate that... :p

The tyres are degrading less because they have been reengineered to accomodate the hybrid weight (which isn't there). There may be a couple of snoozers before the 500 but it should balance out in the second half of the year.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Interesting, I didn't know that

Yeah the hybrids are gonna shake things up I hope

At the very least, no-one is gonna know the fuel numbers quite as well and they'll have to work out all the data for the tracks again, something they probably know off by heart atm

Can't wait...

short term solution for that is to place heat races like in the good old days so they can go full send not worrying with pit stops

...until a caution happens and the whole thing falls

I've recently been thinking that the series could just mandate two fuel mix options: full power and caution. Nothing else. But that would still allow room for the drivers to just do a lot of coasting into the brake zones and running to a lap time.

I really don't think there's much to be done about it without the series intervening so much that the entire thing becomes contrived. All we can really hope for is timely yellows to eliminate the need to save fuel (especially on the final stints).

It doesn't even need to be that complex - just set the race distance at a number which doesn't invite fuel saving. 100 laps is probably the worst lap count for a race where one tank of fuel gets you 31, because it guarantees that the best strategy is to extend each stint to 33 or 34. Obviously it didn't help that the first yellow came out just before lap 30, which meant that 2-stopping was still viable but you needed to save even more to make it work.

Either cut it down to 95 laps or bump it to 105.

CART tried fuel windows and it made it even worse, somehow (though with the fuel mix ratio knob on the driver's steering wheel, it wasn't even really a problem back then either, it was forced upon the series by teams who already knew they had one foot out the door, defecting to the IRL)

The racing took a huge nosedive between 2001 and 2002 when they brought them in (the teams also demanding Traction and Launch control didn't help either, natch)

So whatever it is, don't do that

I hope whenever they get around to the new car they think about making a bigger fuel tank so they can get through a road/street course without refueling, like F1 does

Then they can just have refueling at the 500 mile races, whichever ones aside from Indy they have left by then

Or get another tyre manufacturer to make tyres that drop off before the fuel window is over, but that won't be Bridgestone.,..

Outside of endurance racing, 1 fuel stop is enough in any race.
