Jeez...ok, electrical activity during thunderstorms is potentially dangerous, we get it, but come on...this advisory makes it sound like Nashville is going to be carpet bombed within minutes.

I'm sure people at the track can find shelter from rain and lightning by themselves in a major metropolitan area.

And, besides that, they will have to find a solution, because this can't go on. This almost equals to banning racing at rainy weekends.

How many races have been run under thunderstorms since racing has become a professional sport and nobody even flinched?

Do football matches get suspended for lightning in the area?

But that could be a solution: make covered grandstands mandatory.

This is Tennessee we're talking about. Tornado alley. The thunderstorms are no joke

Yes? They don't play during a thunderstorm, the players are brought in right away.

Fans are back in the stands for 25 minutes now and Colton Herta is still in bed. Ehats going on there? When do they want to start? Are they waiting out the gold on NBC?

In the US: yes. I was at a Louisville City FC match about 6-7 years ago that was suspended a couple times due to lightning in the area.

weather is being quite weird, 5 years ago till today there seems to have at least 2 delayed events per month in top notch american racing

weather here also is going nuts, each summer we've been experiencing hailstorms, thunderstorms, floods, the whole package, then in early 2021 rain decreased dramatically, so in the past summer we had consistent light rain but no storms, which is the sweet spot considering damages

Yes, all major outdoor sports here in the States (and Canada for that matter) - it's been the common rule for about 10 years now (ever since a fan got killed at Pocono during a NASCAR race weekend)

it's felt like every single game for Charlotte FC in the last month has been either delayed or outright cancelled due to lightning.

the NFL Hall of Fame game / preseason opener earlier this week in Canton was delayed for about a hour & a half due to lightning

Lucas Oil Late Models did race in a lightning storm at Portsmouth a couple months back, but they pulled all of their camera workers & went to static/wall cameras due to "OSHA regulations"

It's not that being in tornado alley automatically grants an higher number of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes compared to somewhere else.

Especially if the area is under a "generic thunderstorm" forecast, with no severe risk.

can't they simply install devices to counter lightining strikes away from the venues or is that too expensive and is cheaper to delay that precious TV time that sponsors want to show off their products?

"Football" is "soccer" in UK English. That's what I meant. And I have yet to see a match suspended for "thunder in the vicinity" in major European competitions.

My whole point is: it's completely silly to suddenly notice in 2010-ish (or whenever that unfortunate death happened) that a lightning strike can be fatal, after having held major outdoor events for decades.
Just like say, 20 years ago, people couldn't have died or didn't deserve to be protected.

If they can't address the matter without cancelling events, sooner or later somebody's going to go bankrupt over this.

GT America raced late last night but that was intentional since they have headlights

It's not just the fans you have to protect, it's the marshalls, staff, production crews, etc.

And yes, I've seen football (soccer) matches suspended because of lightning. It doesn't happen often because the season is during the winter but just last year a boy died in the UK after being struck during a training session and one died in Russia 2 years ago while warming up.

Here's what happens when it hits:

It's less the grandstands fans then everyone else roaming about. The grandstands should be grounded (they probably aren't but they should be) but people milling about in water are unprotected.

It is what it is. They should have about 3 hours of solid daylight from now. 4 hours if they're on central time.

engines will be fired in 4 minutes


This is the general rule for everything here now, given it's apart of insurance & OSHA regulation
