“Memorial Day weekend has always provided Indianapolis 500 fans an opportunity to honor the men and women who have fought and sacrificed for our nation’s freedom. This August, we’ll also have a unique and powerful opportunity to honor the contributions and heroism of the doctors, nurses, first responders and National Guard members serving on the front lines of the fight against CoViD-19.” -Mark Miles, President and CEO of Penske Entertainment Corporation. Times have changed, but The Greatest Spectacle in Racing still stands. After a long wait, The Indianapolis 500 is finally here, first time held in August since the history of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing for its hundred and fourth running. Many things are still unanswered, will there be crowd in the grandstands? Who are the final entries? Will they have to postpone it until May 2021? If we get the race on going this August, how's the weather gonna play a factor? IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are entering new era under the ownership of Roger Penske in a whole new world and situations that none of could foresee after previous Indy500. So many things have changed. And since this year marks changed tradition to previous runnings, let's have a look on some retired traditions and history through out the years. Riding mechanics. Mandatory at the Indy 500 from 1912 to 1922 and 1930 to 1937 but the quest for speed by reducing weight and improving aerodynamics meant the end of the era of riding mechanics. No milk today. Milk was not served after WW2 between 1946 to 1955. The 1955 winner Bob Sweikert drinking water instead. Milk has been served ever since, but in 1993 Emerson Fittipaldi took orange juice first, but after crowd booeing, he switched to milk and later apologized. Ferrari 375. Ferrari's first and so far the only Indy500 appearance 1952. Only Alberto Ascari was able to qualify Prancing Horse to the race itself, but retired due broken wheel. Ferrari has not returned since. Stock blocks. Back in the hey-days of Indy 500 private entries were helped with different rule set to enter with cheaper stock block engines. Buick was a good option since the engine was powerful and entry money was higher than what it cost to qualify for the race. In 1994 Penske with Mercedes-Benz I500 engine exploited this rule and basically caused the split of IndyCar to IRL and CART. CART entries. During the IRL era, some CART power house teams entered the series and with good results. The youngest winner. Troy Ruttman was 22 years and 80 days old when he won in 1952. The oldest winner. Al Unser Sr. was 47 years and 360 days old when he won in 1987. The oldest entry. A.J. Foyt, 57 years, 128 days old in 1992. The youngest entry. A. J. Foyt IV, 19 years, 0 days old in 2003. The race probably won't be good with likely higher temperatures and therefore less grip and also with the added weight of the aero screen which will make the cars understeer even more. But it's my favorite race of the year and I will love every lap! |

Foyt Jr. in 1992 should be the oldest starter. But he did entered in 1993, withdrew his car after Robby Gordon crashed the other Foyt entry in pole day practice. |

Grandstand cap now limited to 25% hope Roger is able to set a new standard for social distancing at race tracks in the USA. Tracks like Daytona, Sebring & Talladega have done good thus far, but the SMI tracks of Bristol & Texas were extremely lax with limited security. |

That's amazing job by mr. Roger Penske and his crew. Not being creedy, not willing to give up the greatest spectacle. And for me the signal here is clear. He knows that this will not be profitable approach, but it's a one that shows responsiveness, integrity and respect to the fans. While it's not good for this 500, and who knows how's the next one is going to be, this is a good way to go for a long haul. People will remember the ones who cared and took actions to do their business as safely as possible. |

Weren't they talking about increasing some HP this year to compensate for the extra weight of the Aeroscreen (and also just to gradually start chasing speed records bit by bit...) Gone a bit quiet on that so maybe not this year, but still, would be nice. |

I dunno guys, after the Bourdais and Hinch crashes the last few years there and more at other tracks, do we really want that record ever broken? While our eyes can't really tell the difference between them taking turn 2 at 230mph and 200mph, I can guarantee their bodies can tell a difference when crashing into that turn 2 wall. |

I'm quite surprised they haven't managed to fill the grid, even considering the state of the world right now. Pippa Mann looks set to miss it based on her recent comments, which is a shame after the result last year with what could almost be called a classic privateer entry. |

Yeah, Pippa hasn't given up, but it hasn't looked likely all year. |

Haven't you been paying attention, we have the aeroscreen now, so obviously the drivers are impervious to any harm. I'm waiting for the first time one of these spins at high speed, when they brought in the ugly aero package they "forgot" to test it going backwards, who knows what will happen with all the extra DF generated by this thing when it gets turned around Practice is gonna be fun. |
