Oh yeah, forgot the 1994 season. Nick Heidfeld also had a testing incident at Barcelona in early 00's, where a small bird hit his helmet on the main straight.

Anyway, I don't think a canopy cockpit is the solution to have. Yes, it would have helped Surtees, Massa, Hinchcliffe and Wilson, but there would have been almost equal amount of accidents where it could have caused problems. Simona's fiery crash at Texas some years ago for example. Also, many issues with canopy is unsolved. It needs heating system for rainy/humid events, windshield wipers and a quick removing system that would not get blocked even if the car is turned upside down.

Closed cockpit also prevents fans to see their drivers working with their cars. Yesterday we would have missed Kimball/Hawksworth gesturing during their collision had the cockpit been closed. Not that important than safety, but closed cockpit also removes some of the attraction of the sports.

And come to think of it, we already have poor driving standards in majority of open wheel categories. Imagine if drivers get more false feeling of safety? Closed cockpit would have not saved Wheldon nor Bianchi. Arguably both of those accident demonstrated overly aggressive driving when there was an accident ahead. Or how Ed and Karam (or Maldonado and F3 drivers) defend their positions race after race. I fear that this kind of behavior would be even more common with closed cockpits.

But back to Wilson's incident. I read a news report from Finnish broadcast company YLE, that said Wilson felt down into coma, rather than got anesthetized into it. That's obviously not a good sign of his condition, like not having information wether he was or was not operated at the hospital. Let's hope some good news would come soon.

Still feels horrible :(. Not a lot of detailed information either, (e.g. is he breathing on his own, was surgery performed (pressure release, hematoma removal?), neurological signs?). If he remains stable, only time will tell.

Man this feels like shit -.-

Honestly the lack of any substantive news is disheartening. Was a great race too.

Yeah up to the end where they started crashing too much, I enjoyed it more than Fontana.

Come on Justin...

I met him in 2006 at Long Beach and he's such a genuinely nice person.

Turns out, Tony Stewart lent his plane to Justin's family so they could flay out to be at his side. Smoke does it a lot for racing families apparently, a few people let slip over Twitter that he did so but he prefers to keep it quite.

There were a lot of NASCAR fans in the stands on Sunday that said they'd love to come back to an Indycar race. A lot of the people I talked to in the parking lot had not been to either of the first two Indycar races at Pocono. It's a shame the race was marred by this accident, but it was a very entertaining race from the stands. I watched some of it on TV when we got back and it actually didn't seem as exciting as it did in person. Previous editions of the race were much better on TV than in the stands.

Canopies have been talked about as far back as Emmo getting whacked in the head by a seagull at Indy in the 80's. The fact they have yet to be implemented leads me to believe that the problems surrounding them are harder to solve than any of us may think. However, of note in that is the fact the Top Fuel Dragsters are far more likely to have an accident where the result is upside down and on fire than the Indycar guys and the NHRA green lighted them. I don't think that driver extraction is the problem, I think that oil, rain, fogging, driver visibility are all the major issues that need to be resolved.

It's an unfortunate deal all the way around when you think of all the things that had to lineup perfectly for this to happen. A half second one way or the other, 5 feet left or right... And it would have banged off the roll hoop instead. Also of note, the fans at the track were shown no replays of the crash and there was a lot of confusion for a while as to who was being airlifted to the hospital. We all knew something was badly wrong since they had the helicopter warming up before the ambulances even left the crash scene.

EDIT:

Tony only portrays the bad boy dick and at times, he truly can be one. However, in reality, he'll bend over backwards to help anyone in the sport who needs it. He donates millions to charity and gives what he has to those who need it when it's necessary. This is just one more example of it. I'm no Stewart fan, but this is a classy move from someone in a completely unrelated racing discipline.

And with the 100th Indy 500 set for May of 2016, the thought of racing on open-wheel's biggest stage – or anywhere else – without a safety R&D plan and a new chassis timeline would be inexplicable.
This is where we look to IndyCar for leadership. This is where the series needs to break out of its reactive mindset and commit to a proactive strategy to safeguard its drivers. IndyCar cannot prevent every type of accident or injury from happening, but they can address the known problems. Waiting for 2018 or 2019 isn't acceptable. For Justin's sake, and for all of the current and future IndyCar drivers, the time for action is here and now.

As for Karam, he said it let go without warning. Scary.

I really hope Justin pulls through. I had the pleasure of meeting him at San José in 2006 and spoke to him many times whilst he was helping out with the ChampCar game.

I'm beginning to think that canopies are a when and not an if thing now, and I have no issue with that. People who cry "but tradition..." are missing the bugger picture. A riding mechanic was traditional. Front engined cars were traditional. Cross-ply tyres and drum brakes were traditional.

There's room for sentimentality in other aspects, safety shouldn't suffer because it has been misplaced.

Just watched the race, that was very unlucky for Justin. I hope his situation is, at worst, the same as da Matta's. He's a northern bloke, so should be made of pretty tough stuff.

(Could somebody please remove the utterly insincere Twitter shit from the thread title?)

Isn't a good sign, I assume. If it was for a regular update, a written statement is the norm. Hope I'm wrong.
