Oh yeah, forgot the 1994 season. Nick Heidfeld also had a testing incident at Barcelona in early 00's, where a small bird hit his helmet on the main straight.
Anyway, I don't think a canopy cockpit is the solution to have. Yes, it would have helped Surtees, Massa, Hinchcliffe and Wilson, but there would have been almost equal amount of accidents where it could have caused problems. Simona's fiery crash at Texas some years ago for example. Also, many issues with canopy is unsolved. It needs heating system for rainy/humid events, windshield wipers and a quick removing system that would not get blocked even if the car is turned upside down.
Closed cockpit also prevents fans to see their drivers working with their cars. Yesterday we would have missed Kimball/Hawksworth gesturing during their collision had the cockpit been closed. Not that important than safety, but closed cockpit also removes some of the attraction of the sports.
And come to think of it, we already have poor driving standards in majority of open wheel categories. Imagine if drivers get more false feeling of safety? Closed cockpit would have not saved Wheldon nor Bianchi. Arguably both of those accident demonstrated overly aggressive driving when there was an accident ahead. Or how Ed and Karam (or Maldonado and F3 drivers) defend their positions race after race. I fear that this kind of behavior would be even more common with closed cockpits.
But back to Wilson's incident. I read a news report from Finnish broadcast company YLE, that said Wilson felt down into coma, rather than got anesthetized into it. That's obviously not a good sign of his condition, like not having information wether he was or was not operated at the hospital. Let's hope some good news would come soon.
. Not a lot of detailed information either, (e.g. is he breathing on his own, was surgery performed (pressure release,hematoma removal?), neurological signs?). If he remains stable, only time will tell.
