Only 3 cars haven't turned a lap yet during this afternoon session. Just under 2 hours left of practice, but the session is under yellow flag due to incoming weather.

Radar is showing a thunderstorm just north of Brownsburg.

The black "Weather Alert" screen is always real encouraging... :(

Looking at the radar the heavy rain should go to the North of the track but there's a small cell that just popped up due west of the track that could drop a bit of rain.

I got totally suckered into the qualifying last year...watched it all start to finish, live, and wasn't distracted by my phone or anything. Quite unusual for me.

I remember seeing the first few cars go around and was completely blown away by average speeds...then the front runners began their runs and I was completely gobsmacked at how much faster the few km/h they managed to do actually looked. They showed the difference between 'going really fast' and 'absolutely at the very limit of what can be done'.

This race just gets you hooked...

They are quite dicey on the straights on the first day. The restarts this year are going to be mental.

Doesn't seem to be any problem with drafting in the corners.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Leist and Daly are the two missing from the scoreboard.

So, we're going to this race for the first time this year. Definitely excited for the Indy 500 to be my first IndyCar race attended.

For anybody that's been there before, what is traffic like the day of? Trying to figure out when to leave for the track. We're already planning on trying to leave as early as possible, but our hotel is only 20 minutes away from the track. Trying to see if anybody with experience in this trip has some tips for getting to the track and parked in a comfortable amount of time? One thing I hate about a race weekend is rushing to get to the seats.

Ours was about the same and we left really early. We didn't drive, got an uber, but it still got stopped in traffic so we ended up getting out and walking part of the way. I actually thought that was more fun, as lots of people walk in to the track.

No doubt Castroneves a strong contender again! Hopefully he gets his fourth Indy 500 this year!

Traffic is brutal on race day. Leave around 6:30 a.m. or 7 a.m. I'm not joking. You can settle down once you've parked and enjoy the surroundings.

Its an abolutely magical moment to hear the gunshot in the morning, see the gates open with thousands of people already lined up and then see the sun rise behind the stands from the infield. Best place and time in the world for a breakfast beer. Then you can chill all morning watch the parking lots and stands fill up and socialize with the tailgaters along the mound in the backstraight.

Edit: What I want to say is: Be there at 5.

When I stayed in downtown in 2016, it took me 2 hours to get to the track on raceday!! Next time I will be walking.

Seriously, leave an hour earlier than you planned for. Traffic on 500 race day makes JFK Airport look like nothing.

Take a cab at 7AM. That worked out great for us, and we lived on the east side of town.
