Indy mayor Greg Ballard was struck by debris at @IMS race start and suffered a minor soft tissue injury. Track statement says "he is fine".

They really need to have a catch fence along the main straight between the pits and track, all it takes is for someone to get flipperz into there while there are pit services going on and it'd be.... well I don't even want to think :(

Not disagreeing, but he was in the flagstand waving the green. http://www.indystar.com/story/news/poli ... x/8943993/

Plowman says he also took a hit to the helmet from debris at the start, but I guess not as hard and on the Felipe Massa visor strip

The drivers (especially Rahal) are blaming the new rules for the start accidents. Ignoring that Rahal did it all to himself, everybody seems to have forgotten that the reason for the new rules is that they kept crashing under the old ones. The one constant in each situation is the drivers.

Gotta admit, once the race got started, it was pretty good. Decent crowd too, much better than I thought it'd be. Really, if you have two weeks to vacation in the heartland, Indy is a good choice. Indy 500, road course race, pole day, practice, pit stop competion and all can be had for probably half the cost of the same two weeks in Charlotte and you're getting more for your money.

Plus a few USAC races at IRP and at Indiana State Fairgrounds. Definitely something I want to experience some day.

I didn't even throw in all the local dirt track action that can be had. Don't forget the little 500 at Anderson Speedway. Practice and qualifying start the Thursday before the race at the big track. 33 asphalt sprint cars lined up 3 abreast like the big boys on a 1/4 mile high banked soup bowl for 500 laps. Shit, that right there is worth the plane ticket.

From other angles, there were two guys in black in an even more dangerous position, directly in the line of fire of debris, but they were wise enough to start running away as soon as they saw him stalled. If it were a clueless rally crowd, they would have gotten closer to have a better look, and taken some rod to the face.
