Fuck I didn't even know about this. It kinda pisses me off because CART/ChampCar never went to normally aspirated engines. They were so poorly managed back then it's appalling.

Its what happened once they lost the Indianapolis 500, they were a chicken with its head cut off. Racing was great though :)

CART was a monkey fucking a proverbial football at that point in history.

There's that and Toyota/Honda able to leverage threatening to go to the IRL to be able to push through whatever changes they wanted, pissing off Ford.

Then Tony George getting involved trying to use all of this to his own evil gains.

They actually all had a party at the end of the 02 season with a cake saying "RIP CART" which was pretty disgusting, they just hoped with some of the teams and 2 of the engine manufacturers CART would give up and wave the white flag and hand everything to the Great Inheritor (who inherited everything from his family line except intelligence)

If CART actually had decent management that focused on their own series and not scheming to get back to Indy, they'd have knocked TG and his incompetents aside and have won the war.
But they were too busy infighting and splitting up the spoils for personal gain, with Penske at the forefront of that.

2001 was for me the last "real" CART season, large grids, long calendar, even the ESPN coverage / graphics just made it the complete package.

2002 was pretty good, but the manufacturers (perhaps knowing they had one foot out the door) demanded CART legalised traction control for the season, which along with the ridiculous mandatory pit windows they also demanded that year, really hurt the racing.

Then the exodus happened and CART limped along, though still holding the true throughline of Indycar history until it folded.

I agree. Also it was the last year that Eurosport actually cared about showing races live

LOL that's not true, Motorsport has always been a "ehh, well there's nothing else on, might as well show the races live" last resort for them since they split with the motors TV guys in the late 90s :p

Maybe it just seemed that way as they had a longer calendar so they were able to show more races live. Or maybe I'm just looking at it through rose tinted spectacles

CART had a better run of it because it was in the evenings when there was less live european sport to clash, but we all have horror stories of sitting waiting for racing to start when Tennis, golf, horsey shit or even table tennis was overrunning.

I remember being seriously stunned Eurosport were about the only broadcaster to show Road America 2001 in full when in reality they would take any opportunity to not show it.

On the subject, Paul Tracy's win in 1997 at Gateway is a thing of beauty, imo

with the return of the Glen this week. I guess I'll post this

(also random question, does any video footage exist of the CART race in the early 80's?)
