The calendar has been released, which seems like a good time for a new thread.

Out are Monaco (as this year belongs to the Historics), Bern (as the event was a one-off with potential to return later on) and Hong Kong (as the odds of getting through the weekend without some part of the track being barricaded and set on fire are slim). In are new events at Seoul and Jakarta and returning is London.

On the teams front, Porsche and Mercedes join the series as manufacturers, but Venturi will revert to being a customer (Mercedes), as may NIO after the team was sold.

Not an enormous amount of movement amongst the drivers, with the lineups at Audi, Nissan, Virgin, Venturi and Mahindra remaining the same. Nyck de Vries will replace Gary Paffett at Mercedes, James Calado is the new full-time driver alongside Mitch Evans at Jaguar, and there is some musical chairs precipitated by the departure of Andre Lotterer from Techeetah to Porsche - his team-mate will be Neel Jani, and his replacement at Techeetah is Antonio Felix da Costa. Da Costa is in turn replaced at BMW by Max Gunther, whose team-mate is currently unknown although Sims would appear to be the favourite to hold onto what is currently his seat. Gunther's old seat at Dragon is filled by Nico Muller, whose new team-mate will be Brendan Hartley. NIO have also yet to announce any drivers after the completion of the team's takeover.

It's also a good idea to race at Jakarta before the entire city sinks underwater

This series is becoming serious business, the Mercedes / De Vries combo is a bit of a direct blow to F1.

Virgin have set the pace during the testing at Valencia this week; https://www.autosport.com/fe/news/14661 ... t-setbacks

The full grid has also been completed with Sims retaining his BMW drive alongside Gunther and NIO slotting Ma Qing Hua in alongside Oliver Turvey.

Santiago round might get canned (too, if we count Hong Kong as being cancelled) due some recent unrest there.

Paris tickets were just made available, tickets have doubled in price for "action" turns.

I knew this day would come, but not this brutally. Last year I got the same tickets (front row seats at crash-fest turn) for around 50 euros. Looking back at the past races here, it reminds me of how spectator access to racetracks has progressed through the whole history of F1, except condensed in a few years.

At least we still get access to the pit lane, but I expect that to also soon require VIP or Paddock Pass etc... Anyways, I'll ride the wave and enjoy it while it lasts, such a lineup of drivers racing a couple metro stations from your home is no event to watch from TV :)

Paul has chosen to post today's news about the introduction of pitstops for Gen 3 in last year's series thread, so here it is in this one as well. :p

If they were adding pitstops for the sake of having pitstops, I wouldn't like it, but there's some upside IMO. It will allow the cars to have more powerful engines as there will be more juice to play with without needing to add more batteries and it will publicly showcase technology that has very direct road relevance that could resolve one of the biggest sticking points with the rollout of electric road vehicles - the infrastructure currently needed to faciliate an 8-hour charge to fill the battery.

It was still relevant to those...err....watching on Catchup? :whistling:

Oh well, I'm glad Formula E is forward thinking, that's the whole point of it really while F1 seems to be stagnating

I just really, really hate pitstops in series that are doing well enough without them ;)

It would look fine without the shark-fin but the shark-fin just looks horrid imo.

I wonder if it really needs a shark fin, as those cars barely reach 200km/h

I guess they're just for decoration. I'm sure Bubb Rubb and Lil' Sis would approve.

CART in the 90s found out that shark fins didn't do shit but most teams kept them because other teams had them

Why F1 in 2017 and Formula E now suddenly think they're cool is beyond me, it's not an aeroplane mate, just a racecar

Aside from that, it does look a lot better. Any time the wheels are opened up has to be a good thing.

CART and 90s aero knowhow not very relevant today, is it?

In F1 they were used definitely for performance reasons. In LMPs they're there for safety reasons.

The purpose of putting a fin there is to reduce yaw sensitivity - remember how BAR put an active rudder in the same place for their Bonneville attempt? Same reason.

Given how most of the aero on these cars is for cleaning up the air rather than downforce, I would bet that it has at least a small effect on the overall package. Probably at below 200 KM/h, too.

Most importantly its prime advertising space. Especially in a spec series, where performance doesn't matter.
