After dominating Bahrain, Jamie Whincup heads into the round with a comfortable buffer over his 2 main championship contenders. With 600 points still available, he has a lead of 187 points over Mark Winterbottom, and 292 points over Garth Tander. Craig Lowndes is still a mathematical chance at 549 points in arrears, but only a disaster from the top 3 would see this occur. Worst track in the country, but still looking forward to the race. Wonder if Skaife can gain some dignity before retirement. |

News since the last round which some will have been covered before PWR sells V8 licence to Walkinshaw
Quote: Release date: 14/11/2008
Paul Weel Racing (PWR) will close its doors at the end of the year as it has sold its V8 Supercar licence to Walkinshaw Performance (WP). It is yet to be confirmed which driver will use the ex-PWR licence next year. While WP currently has the use of the two licences owned by John and Margaret Kelly for its HSV Dealer Team Racing, it is believed that driver Rick Kelly and the two Kelly-owned licences will be on the move in 2009, leaving HSV Dealer Team Racing driver Paul Dumbrell as the most likely to use the newly acquired licence. PWR gave rookie Andrew Thompson his first full-time main-game drive this year and its closure means the youngster is on the hunt for a drive for 2009. If there is one thing Thompson is certain of, it is his desire to keep racing in the V8 Supercar Championship. “I definitely want to be back in the main game next year,†he declared. And, he says he is close to signing with another team. “I have been talking to a couple of people in regards to next year, but I am not at the point where we have signed anything,†Thompson explained. “I’m pretty confident I’ll sign something soon, but right now I’m just in discussions and finalising a few things. “Hopefully over the next week we can get to the point where we can lock something away and have next year secured so I can go back to concentrating on racing at the last two rounds.†While Thompson would “ideally†like to drive with a Holden team in 2009, the youngster says driving a Ford is definitely a possibility. “I wouldn’t mind staying (with Holden) but really, I’ve got to do what’s best for me because it’s getting pretty close,†he said. “Whether it’s Blue or Red, I’ve got to make the decision based on what’s right for me.†Thompson is no stranger to driving for Ford; he drove for Jim Beam Racing in the 2007 enduros and also raced a Falcon in the 2006 Fujitsu Series. When asked whether he had been able to show his full potential in 2008, Thompson replied “bits and piecesâ€. “If you look over the results really carefully we have definitely shown the potential, but our season has been littered with quite a few mechanical problems and the Bathurst crash with Paul (Weel) definitely set us back because the car was destroyed,†he said. “We have shown a lot of potential, but we haven’t got the same equipment or funding the teams up the front of the grid have so I think we’ve been punching above our weight this year.†Thompson celebrated his 21st birthday on November 3. “It feels like I’m getting a bit old now,†he laughed. “There’s definitely a bit of change on the horizon and hopefully with the plans we are putting in place we can sort out next year and it should be a whole new era for me.†Author:Briar Gunther Source:BigPond Sport - copyright V8 Licence Stoush
Quote: Release date: 17/11/2008
The old guard and the new guard of V8 Supercars are at odds over who will end up with the PWR licence. PWR, which will shut shop at the end of this year, has confirmed to BigPond Sport that Walkinshaw Performance will buy its V8 Supercar licence. But current Britek driver Marcus Marshall is under the impression he has bought it from PWR owner Kees Weel. Marshall will run a Triple Eight customer car next year, following the restructure of Jason Bright’s Fujitsu Racing outfit for 2009. “Old Tom (Walkinsaw) thinks that he’s got it (the licence) and we think that we’ve got it,†Marshall said. “We – my sponsors – did a handshake deal with Kees and a deposit’s been paid and paperwork has been passed through the hands of his solicitor so the deal has been done in my eyes.†But Marshall remained positive and was not too concerned if his team did not end up with the PWR licence. “There’s a little bit going on out there and there’s, I suppose, a changing of the guard so there’s other opportunities out there,†he said. “It would be sad if we didn’t end up with that licence, but at the end of the day we will be on the grid in 2009.†The future of Bright’s second licence is yet to be decided and Marshall may even end up buying that one. Marshall revealed that the sponsor for his one-car, Gold Coast-based, team was a brand new sponsor entering the sport. “Nothing is going to be announced until next year, and all I can say is it’s very exciting and very positive for 2009,†he said. Marshall said the sponsor will own the licence for the new race team. “It is completely separate to what Jason (Bright) is doing,†he said. “Jason decided to do what he wanted to do with the Stones and I have been putting this (new team) together for awhile. “It was an amicable split; everything was all good in the end.†While Marshall would not disclose his 2009 sponsor, he did rule out the No Limit Group. His father John is the Chief Executive Officer of the property development company, which was set to buy the PWR team in May last year until the deal fell through at the 11th hour. “This time round, No Limit and my father have absolutely nothing to do with this team,†Marshall said. “He’s just a spectator and that’s the way he likes it now. “I’ve always tried to do my own thing and be my own man in this sport, but I’ve managed to do it and have got a sponsor on board with me.†Marshall said last year’s failed deal was water under the bridge as far as he was concerned, and said Weel had been a “great ambassador for the sportâ€. Marshall’s team will start the 2009 V8 Supercar Champion Series with a BF Falcon and switch over to an FG mid-year. Weel said the sale of the licence was yet to be finalised. Author:Briar Gunther Source:BigPond Sport - copyright Glenfords to exit motorsport
Quote: Release date: 17/11/2008
Glenfords Tool Centres, the naming rights sponsor for the Paul Cruickshank Racing #111 Falcon, have announced they will not be renewing their sponsorship agreement for the 2009 season and that they are in fact intending to exit all motor sport sponsorship as of the end of 2008. The announcement will see the end of a three year partnership with PCR that commenced in 2006. Glenfords played an integral part in the team being the first ever to graduate from the Development Series and establish themselves in the main Championship. The team commenced in the championship with driver Marcus Marshall in 2006 and then in a major coup had the privilege of working with John Bowe in his final season in 2007. Current driver Fabian Coulthard, with the ongoing support of Glenfords, has this year established himself as a serious contender for the top ten. "For such a challenging & competitive sport we've had a good run ," said Glenfords CEO Peter Simpson. "We're particularly fond of all the drivers who have raced under the Glenfords Racing umbrella over the years, nine in total, who were either known winners or fresh talents that were nurtured into winners, which helped the image of our brand immensely along the way." "When we first started in motor racing no-one really knew who Glenfords were! We’re the largest discount tool retailer in Australia and now a well-known entity, so our sponsorship has been very beneficial from a branding perspective. We've enjoyed ourselves along the way too – it’s just time to shift focus. This is not to say we are permanently moving away from the motorsport game but will review our options and opportunities as they arise in future years" "We'd like to thank all people that have contributed towards making Glenfords Racing a success over the last five years." Paul Cruickshank and the entire team at PCR would like to thank Glenfords for their invaluable contribution and support throughout their long partnership and wish them well with future endeavors. And so begins a new era for Paul Cruickshank Racing! Source:V8 Latest News TKR gives rookie a chance (Daniel Gaunt is the 5th driver to drive for TKR in the sprint rounds this year).
Quote: TKR GIVE YOUNG KIWI DRIVER CHANCE IN V8 SUPERCARS
Twenty-three year old Daniel Gaunt from Auckland will make his V8 Supercar debut in Tasmania next weekend. The two-time Lady Wigram Trophy winner will pilot the Team Kiwi Racing All Black Ford in the penultimate round of the championship at Symmons Plains near Launceston. Team Kiwi Racing owner David John said the team has continued to look to blood young New Zealand drivers in the major motor race series on either side of the Tasman and had ear-marked Gaunt as an outstanding prospect. As well as wins in the Lady Wigram Trophy, Gaunt has won the New Zealand Toyota Racing Series twice, the New Zealand Grand Prix and the 2003 Australian Drivers Championship in Formula Holden. He is currently competing in the New Zealand GT3 Porsche series where he finished second last season to top rating Craig Baird, who drove for TKR five years ago. While Gaunt knows many of the Australia race tracks from his time spent in Australia competing in the Formula Holden series, the Symmons Plains circuit is not one of them. However a V8 Supercar is not totally foreign to him, having tested with WPS Racing in 2006 and Stone Brothers Racing earlier this year, where he drove in the car campaigned by Shane Van Gisbergen, another young kiwi driver who was blooded in the championship with TKR. “This opportunity is a dream come true for me,†Gaunt said. “I know that may sound like a cliché but I know so many drivers would give anything to have the opportunity to drive in the V8 Supercar Championship. “It means so much to me for Team Kiwi to have the confidence to put me behind the wheel in full race conditions and in such an important race that could decide the championship. It makes me very proud and extremely grateful.†Mr John said Gaunt was high on their lists as a young driver who will benefit from the chance to race in V8 Supercars. “We believe Daniel has the potential to be a solid performer in the Australian V8 Supercar Championship. “He has achieved plenty in New Zealand but the step to the international stage will be a significant one that will take Daniel some time to come to grips with, just as it has for many drivers before him.†“It’s great to see another young kiwi driver achieve something he has dreamed about since he was a teenager. “We may not have the fastest car out there or the biggest budgets but we definitely enjoy seeing the dreams of talented young drivers come true.†Mr John said the drive was not a test for Gaunt but clearly he will be a potential candidate for the fulltime seat will in the TKR All Black machine in 2009. Macintyre is the one who needs that rookie seat, though of course the money would need to be there. |

You'd need a decent sized wallet as well though. From eNews: Jason Bright will race with an SBR built engine this weekend. |

Perkins driving Whincup off the road during Q1 was outright dangerous and he should be penalised or certainly fined at least. Good race however, don't know what Tander was doing. |
