It's awful defending, followed by some of the greatest saves. Does that even itself out?

Ahhh the Setanta year, the great black hole in my BTCC knowledge...

I forget most of what happened that year, even though there were large shunts, soddy driving and Porsches flipping over barriers a go go lol

Obviously wasn't too profitable for them.....

And then there were those awful Setanta adverts...

...which made me hate the unhateable Des Lynam

I'd completely forgotten about this as well. From 3 minutes... John Watson speaks sense :p

Not deliberately turning this into a Plato bitch thread. The Snetterton Facebook page is posting classic BTCC clips, and they just happen to all feature him running into somebody!

Ah yes, the one and only time in 2001 when it wasn't Phil Bennett who was destroying Phil Bennett's car.

He got banned for a round yet Plato will always be allowed to hit as many people as he like.

The thing is, the way the authorities handled 2001 set the tone for the next 10 or so years. Muller and Plato's grudge match was really ugly and some of the "racing" was utterly shameful, as demonstrated in that video. Yet the authorities only penalised one of those two drivers once. And that was for an arguable incident at Silverstone anyway. Had the authorities stepped in and treated Plato and Muller like they did Bennett that one time, we may have not seen the crappy driving tactics from Plato (and a couple of others, *looks towards Neal and Reid*) that we have in the past seasons.

Quote:
All incidents are looked into and any which both the Clerk of Course and the Driving Standards Advisor deem to be unacceptable or avoidable (i.e. not a simple 'racing incident' etc.), are investigated further and action taken where appropriate.

There has been no change to any guidelines given as to the driving standards in the BTCC since 1993, although clearly the racing is much closer amongst more drivers/cars now than I can ever remember - so it is of course almost inevitable that there are more incidents to be investigated.

Quote:
It's simply unrealistic and impractical to even attempt to publish details of all the evidence, inputs and discussions that form the Clerk Of Course's every deliberation and/or decision.

However, as I have said in previous replies on similar subjects, it is worth remembering this important point;
If a driver or team (from either 'side') feels that a decision or penalty is too harsh or too lenient or unfair, then they have the perfect right to appeal that decision to the Stewards in order for them to immediately review it.

A team or driver is never discouraged from lodging an appeal, it is their absolute right to do so and the Stewards adjudicate whilst still at the event.

So although it's idealistic to think that all drivers and teams will always totally agree with every decision, it's also reasonable to assume that if no appeal to a decision is lodged, by either side, then they feel the decision or penalty given was not totally flawed.....

From Alan Gow himself from the BTCC.net forum.

Except in the mid to late nineties there always a strict no-contact code issued by Gow, which he later relaxed in the very late nineties. However I don't think it is merely about close racing but about bad sportsmanship and poor on track conduct that seems to go ignored. We want and like close racing, but not like that.

Interview with Robb Holland, he makes some good points:

There is one thing I wish people would get right, though. Holland is not the first American since Bill Gubelmann to race in the series; Peter Argetsinger raced once in 1986 (a race that also featured Ben Edwards).

In fairness, I think it's got a lot better in the last couple of years. Of course there's still the odd moment here or there, but it's nowhere near as common or as blatant as it was in the mid 2000s.

Famous last words, ahead of a Snetterton weekend where everyone is probably a bit rusty after a long mid-season break

Yeah, Plato nearly caused another Snetterton BTCC pile up right there, wiping out half the field to suit his own ends?

Sure why not....

We're about due a classic Snet start pile up now aren't we? Usually once a decade isn't it? :p
