Will Davison stretched his V8 Supercars points lead by taking his third victory of the 2012 season on the streets of Hamilton in New Zealand.

The Ford Performance Racing driver came through from sixth on the grid to win, as champion Jamie Whincup beat polesitter Garth Tander (Holden Racing Team) to second, and Whincup's Triple Eight Holden team-mate Craig Lowndes chased them home.

Davison had vaulted from sixth to second amid a wild opening lap that saw top three qualifiers Tander, Shane van Gisbergen and David Reynolds trading paint through the first few corners. Tander went from first to third and back again, while van Gisbergen picked up steering damage that would consign him to a 22nd-place finish.

Tander and Davison broke away in a private lead battle for much of the race, joined briefly by Davison's team-mate Mark Winterbottom, who gained ground in the first pitstops but had to pit for steering repairs soon after.

Davison stalked Tander until lap 27 of 59, when he squeezed down the inside into Turn 1.

The FPR man would hold the lead to the flag, despite a safety car period following a crash for Alexandre Premat's Garry Rogers Holden squeezing the pack back together.

Davison withstood some challenges from Tander after the restart, before pulling clear as Whincup - who swiftly recovered from stalling at his first pitstop - battled with Tander and grabbed second with three laps to go.

Tander fended off Lowndes to the flag. Reynolds had been running between them until picking up suspension damage just seven laps from the flag.

Kelly Racing's Rick Kelly came through from 14th on the grid to fifth, ahead of Steve Owen (Dick Johnson Ford) and James Courtney - who also made great progress after qualifying his HRT car only 17th.

Holden trio Michael Caruso (GRM), Fabian Coulthard (Brad Jones Racing) and Russell Ingall (Walkinshaw) completed the top 10.

Too bad there wasn't a great shot of Premat's crash to understand how it happened.

Nice job by Davo, too bad for Reynolds. Although his time will come.

Whincup was attacking Winterbottom hard in the final 2 laps, there was some good side by side action

Anyone else feel the curb hopping rule is not really needed? Just don't see the point as it's a risk vs. reward situation since it takes some skill and guts to use a lot of curb, or I've just not understood the rule properly. *shrug*

If you saw gold coast last year you would see why it's needed, some drivers were cutting is to much and so blatantly it wasn't funny.

I did watch the GC last year and agree it was needed but there it was much easier to cut right through the curbs whereas here it seems like a far bigger challenge and more of a risk vs. reward situation than anything really. But oh well, atleast it adds a strategic ace up your sleeve like we saw with Whincup today.

V8 Supercars uploaded the live coverage of the last 5 laps, as Australian viewers missed the 2 last laps when the satellite link dropped out

Unfortunate situation with the TV coverage at the end, can't really blame Channel 7 for it though, satellite failures are really out of their control.

The sensor for kerb hopping is good in theory, but its wrong to hear engineers telling their drivers how many 'credits' they have saved up for the end of the race....

Someone should watch it and report back what is a blatant cut & what is a mistake etc.. with penalties awarded as appropriate

V8's over in Perth this weekend.

For those that don't know, they'll be using the new pitlane which is now located inside the track opposite the old one.

Pit entry is before the last corner and (I think) pit exit is after turn 1. The new complex also includes a pedestrian bridge.

Could be a wet weekend. Friday practice has already been pretty wet and BOM says:

Forecast for Saturday
Early showers and the risk of a thunderstorm, easing during the morning. A
shower or two continuing in the afternoon. Moderate W'ly winds.

Min 13 Max 23

Sunday
Shower or two.

Min 13 Max 22

Also Speedcafe reported that Bathurst will have debris fencing and concrete barriers on the pit straight most likely for the 2013 race.

I felt bad for Tander but even he probably felt it was a 50/50 deal.

What a finish to Race 3, epically epic.

Closest top 3 in a race in a long time.
