Wouldn't be much of an audience for it in the UK I suspect.

Also thanks pimmy for explaining that to me, clears up my confusion nicely :)

shame that now BTCC has gone live on TV it would be impractical to bring it back.

That makes no sense.

It's very unlikely British television channels would put BTCC night racing on live. And I think people (i.e. teams and drivers) got a bit fed up of it really.

Dedicated motorsport channels would haven't a problem with it, but BTCC is currently on mainstream TV and any mainstream channel would get atrocious ratings for live motorsport on Sat night compared to their usual schedule.

Would it really be a bother on ITV4?

Unless BTCC is going to pay for the loss of advertising ITV4 would suffer - tonight it's showing a 20 year old film, which will still attract a higher audience than live BTCC would.

Would the cost of track infrastructure for night use (e.g. lights) be passed on to ITV? I guess only if it happened because of ITV.

The final multi class BTCC seasons weren't that great. Spectacular racing at times but it was almost always the same drivers winning each class. The lower classes tended to have an advantage as the competition was far weaker and there were less entries. The only way to guarantee a chance of winning the title in the final multi class seasons was to win all the races.

I've just never understood the system, whether different classes had performance disparities or whatever.

I gotta admit I've not seen much footage from that era, so I'm only going on info I've read on the web about it.

It's really quite simple to understand. Cars were split amongst the classes by engine capacity, so generally the larger capacity cars were the fastest. Drivers earnt points based on their finishing position in class; their overall placing was meaningless.

Hence John Cleland becoming the 1989 champ as he won nearly all of the Class C races in his Vauxhall Astra ahead of Ford RS500s and BMW M3s!

Exactly.

Vauxhall used 1989 and Class C perfectly as a way to re-enter BTCC. The class was had little in the way of entrants or competition so they were always guaranteed success plus it was a cheaper class than either Class B or A. They manipulated the rules to ensure championship success but that's the opportunity given to them by the rules so fair play to them.

Gilham returns

We could be looking at a potential grid of 30-31 cars for the last two rounds :D .

So he wasn't out of budget then? If his backers are staying on at his new team :/

Maybe 888 were asking for more money than GSR?

I expect that's the reason.

I'd hate to see them go back to multi-class racing - never understood how it could be seen as improving the show except in racing on a massive scale ala Le Mans. The point about there being multiple classes currently through lack of parity is a temporary one, and it's a bit of a joke to suggest the performance difference between NA and turbos is anywhere as big as different classes would be. Every configuration of car has had a shot at the win this year, and that's what you want to see, not some dinky trophy awarded to the guy who finished 8th outright.

That article contradicts itself. It says Gilham is planning a return, which implies it is not all confirmed. Yet Gilham says he's definitely coming back.

Tomorrow's Autosport magazine says RML are probably going to fit turbos next year, which would mean that TechSpeed would also get the turbos.

Thank goodness for that. Hopefully O'Neill and George may be a little stronger next season (or whoever is driving for that team).

I wonder what moaning there will be next year. We haven't had as long to develop our turbo engine? The NGTC cars are too fast? Honda has too good a package?
